Community Safety Specialist

OVERVIEW:
The Community Engagement & Safety Coordinator supports IMAN's vision of a thriving, safe, and connected community by promoting safety, harm reduction, and respectful engagement across IMAN programs and facilities. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Community Engagement & Safety, this role serves as a visible ambassador for IMAN, supporting community engagement efforts while helping maintain a secure, welcoming environment for participants, staff, and visitors.

This position emphasizes de-escalation, trauma-informed practices, and relationship-based safety strategies in community-based settings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Engagement & Safety

  • Serve as a positive presence and ambassador for IMAN programs, events, initiatives, and community engagements.
  • Act in a leadership capacity during assigned programs, events, and initiatives, supporting a welcoming and respectful environment.
  • Provide assistance to participants, clients, employees, and visitors in accordance with Community Engagement & Safety (CES) procedures and values.
  • De-escalate conflict and respond to tense or volatile situations using trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and approved de-escalation techniques.

Safety & Security Operations

  • Conduct regular safety and security patrols of IMAN properties to promote a safe environment.
  • Support safety screening and harm-reduction procedures for program participants, in accordance with organizational policy, participant consent, and applicable laws.
  • Ensure the security of IMAN premises and the safety and well-being of personnel and visitors.
  • Inspect IMAN properties for safety risks, hazards, or security concerns and complete incident reports as required.
  • Respond to and document accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety breaches, and emergency situations; prepare written reports for CES leadership and file documentation per organizational standards.
  • Support emergency preparedness procedures, including fire prevention, evacuation protocols, traffic control, and incident response.

Systems, Compliance & Training

  • Monitor security and video surveillance systems in accordance with privacy laws, confidentiality standards, and IMAN policies.
  • Retrieve and preserve surveillance footage for internal investigations as authorized and required.
  • Comply with IMAN policies, operating standards, and applicable local, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Support implementation of workplace and public health safety protocols as required.
  • Participate in required trainings, certifications, and employee orientations.
  • Perform other related duties as reasonably assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in security, safety, or community-based safety roles.
  • Working knowledge of safety operations, emergency response procedures, and best practices in community or organizational settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to act ethically, maintain confidentiality, and avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to detail.
  • High level of social sensitivity and ability to engage respectfully with diverse communities.
  • PERC card strongly preferred; must obtain PERC card within a specified timeframe if not already held.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency or crisis situations.
  • Ability to use hands and arms for handling, reaching, and operating equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Multilingual abilities (Spanish and/or Arabic) are a plus.
GENERAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
  • Understanding of security procedures, protocols, and best practices to ensure the safety of personnel and property.
  • Ability to identify and assess potential risks and vulnerabilities in a variety of environments.
  • Proficiency in using surveillance systems and monitoring tools to detect and respond to security threats effectively.
  • Capability to manage crisis situations calmly and efficiently, making critical decisions under pressure to minimize harm and ensure the safety of all involved.
  • Familiarity with various security technologies such as access control systems, CCTV cameras, alarm systems, etc., and the ability to utilize them effectively.
  • Skill in documenting and reporting security incidents accurately and conducting thorough investigations to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Clear and effective communication skills to convey security procedures, policies, and emergency protocols to staff, and external parties.
  • Ability to collaborate with various departments, external agencies, and law enforcement to enhance security measures and respond effectively to security incidents.
  • Being meticulous and thorough in assessing security threats, implementing preventive measures, and conducting investigations to ensure nothing is overlooked.
  • Ability to adapt to changing security threats, organizational needs, and evolving technologies to maintain effective security measures.
