Millwright – Field Service

Job Title: Field Service Millwright – (Pump Mechanic)
Department: Service
Reports to: Service Supervisor
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada
Shift: Monday – Friday (occasional weekends)

OVERVIEW:

The Field Service Millwright is a highly skilled tradesperson responsible for performing on-site field service work for customer rotating equipment, with a primary focus on centrifugal and slurry pumps. This role is field-service driven and involves troubleshooting, installation support, commissioning, inspections, laser scanning, alignment, adjustable suction liner (ASL), and pump health checks at customer sites.

When not assigned to field service activities, Journeyman Millwright will support service shop operations, including disassembly, inspection, repair, assembly, and testing of customer equipment. The successful candidate will work independently or as part of a team, demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, and uphold the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer service.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Field Service (Primary Focus)

  • Perform on-site installation support, commissioning, troubleshooting, inspection, repair, and overhaul of rotating equipment at customer locations
  • Conduct adjustable suction liner (ASL) installations and adjustments, laser scans, alignment checks, and pump health assessments
  • Interpret engineering drawings, OEM manuals, blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to diagnose equipment issues and execute repairs accurately
  • Complete detailed inspection reports, measurements, and service documentation, providing clear recommendations for repair scopes and corrective actions
  • Support outage work, shutdowns, emergency repairs, and 24/7 contract support as required
  • Communicate professionally with customers on-site, providing technical explanations, progress updates, and post-service recommendations
  • Ensure all field work complies with company safety policies, customer site requirements, OEM standards, and applicable regulations
  • Work independently in the field while coordinating with Field Service Supervisors, Service Coordinators, and Shop Leads to ensure efficient execution of work

Pump Mechanic Support (Secondary Focus)

  • Perform disassembly, cleaning, inspection, measurement, repair, and assembly of rotating equipment in the service shop
  • Inspect individual components, document as-found conditions, and verify tolerances against OEM specifications
  • Assist with development of accurate repair scopes and Bills of Material (BOMs) based on inspection findings
  • Support final assembly, testing, and preparation of equipment for shipment
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are clean, organized, and safe
  • Assist with continuous improvement initiatives related to service quality, efficiency, and standard work practices

SAFETY & QUALITY:

  • Promote safety, environmental stewardship, and housekeeping as the highest priority at all times
  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and customer site safety requirements
  • Participate in hazard assessments, job safety analyses, and toolbox talks
  • Ensure all work meets ISO quality standards, OEM specifications, and customer expectations
  • Report non-conformance, participate in root cause analysis, and support corrective and preventative actions

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Journeyman Millwright Certification (Red Seal preferred)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Valid Passport or ability to obtain one (for travel and training requirements)

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in the repair, rebuild, and field service of rotating equipment in an industrial service environment
  • Strong working knowledge of centrifugal, slurry, and process pumps, including components, tolerances, and assembly procedures
  • Experience performing field service activities such as commissioning, laser scanning, alignment verification, inspections, and troubleshooting
  • Ability to independently diagnose mechanical issues and develop practical repair solutions
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, layouts, and OEM documentation
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel for reporting and documentation

ADDITIONAL SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in fast-paced, customer-facing environments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with customers, peers, and leadership
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites and work overtime or on short notice as required

Physical Requirements

Frequent:

  • Standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling
  • Lifting, pushing, and pulling items up to 50 lbs.

Occasional:

  • Overhead work
  • Climbing ladders or stairs
  • Operating forklifts, cranes, and service trucks
  • Wearing respiratory protection and other PPE as required
