About This Position
Job Summary
The Pathologist Transcriptionist is responsible for accurately transcribing and editing pathology reports while also providing administrative and clerical support to the pathology department. This role supports efficient departmental operations through precise documentation, scheduling, communication, and record management, while maintaining strict patient confidentiality and regulatory compliance.

Computer Knowledge & Electronic Equipment Use: Demonstrates ability to consistently utilize electronic equipment and online computer programs to perform job duties, including electronic documentation.
Resource Utilization: Consistently utilizes and maintains supplies and equipment to minimize lost charges and unnecessary equipment repair-replacement.
Confidentiality: Adheres to established policies on privacy and security requirements for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as applicable by Shannon Policy.
Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions
- Transcribe and edit pathology dictation from pathologists using dictation software
- Prepare surgical pathology, cytology, and consultation reports with high accuracy
- Review reports for grammar, clarity, completeness, and medical terminology accuracy
- Ensure reports meet departmental formatting, quality, and turnaround time standards
- Communicate with pathologists to clarify dictation or report details as needed
- Correct transcription errors identified during quality assurance reviews
- Provide general administrative and clerical support to the pathology department
- Answer phones, route calls, take messages, and respond to routine inquiries professionally
- Maintain and organize electronic and paper files, records, and reports
- Serve as a point of contact between pathologists, laboratory staff, and other departments
- Adheres to HIPAA, institutional, and regulatory requirements
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Preferred
- Medical transcription training or equivalent experience
Experience:
- Preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, particularly pathology terminology
- Knowledge of transcription software, word processing, and EPIC
