About This Position
Summary
The Structural Steel Detailer is responsible for producing accurate, high-quality shop and erection drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel projects. This role supports fabrication and erection by translating contract documents, engineering designs, and project requirements into clear, buildable drawings and models that meet company standards, AISC requirements, and project schedules. The Detailer works closely with the Detailing Manager, Project Management, Engineering, and the Shop to ensure coordination and constructability.
Key Areas
Detailing & Production
- Prepare detailed shop and erection drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel using approved detailing software.
- Develop accurate 3D models, connection details, and bills of material in accordance with project specifications and company standards.
- Incorporate engineering information, RFIs, and design revisions into drawings in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ensure drawings are complete, coordinated, and ready for fabrication and erection.
Quality & Compliance
- Follow established detailing standards, workflows, and quality control procedures.
- Self-check drawings for accuracy, completeness, and constructability prior to submission.
- Ensure compliance with applicable AISC, AWS, and project-specific codes and standards.
- Address review comments and revisions efficiently while maintaining drawing integrity.
Project Coordination
- Communicate effectively with the Detailing Manager, engineers, project managers, and fabrication personnel to resolve issues and clarify requirements.
- Support coordination efforts with internal teams and external partners as needed.
- Meet assigned project schedules and production targets.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay current with detailing software updates, best practices, and industry standards.
- Contribute ideas to improve detailing efficiency, quality, and consistency.
- Maintain organized project files, models, and documentation.
Qualifications
- 3–7 years of experience in structural steel detailing (commercial, industrial, or heavy structural preferred).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SDS/2, or equivalent detailing software.
- Working knowledge of AISC, AWS, and standard steel fabrication practices.
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
- Understanding of fabrication and erection processes and how they impact detailing.
- Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Working Conditions
Environment
- Primarily office-based in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
- Occasional visits to fabrication shops or construction sites to support coordination and constructability.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers for computer work, and communicate via phone and email.
- Occasional walking through shop or jobsite environments, including standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and wearing PPE (steel-toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, etc.).

Compensation
The compensation range for this role is $48,000 – $70,000 per year. The actual compensation offered will be based on skills, experience, and internal equity, and will fall within this range.

Canadian work experience is not a requirement for this position. Candidates will be assessed based on their skills, qualifications, and overall experience.
