Industrial Controls & Automation Engineer
Location: Henrico, VA
Employment Type: Direct Hire, Full-Time
Salary: Starting at $100,000 annually
We are seeking a Controls & Automation Engineer to support and enhance manufacturing systems within a regulated production environment. This role is responsible for maintaining automation infrastructure, assisting with capital initiatives, and ensuring systems operate efficiently while meeting compliance standards.
You will collaborate with internal teams and external partners while also taking ownership of assigned systems and projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesAutomation & System Implementation
- Support automation and controls projects from initial planning through final execution
- Assist with project scope definition, scheduling, vendor coordination, and technical requirements
- Program, configure, and test PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and drive technologies
- Provide support for electrical systems related to automation projects
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Identify and resolve issues within PLC-based systems and SCADA platforms
- Troubleshoot drives, instrumentation, control panels, and industrial communication networks
- Recommend and implement improvements to enhance system reliability and performance
System Integrity & Compliance
- Maintain automation systems in a validated and compliant state
- Support system documentation, backups, and data integrity practices
- Assist with upgrades, recovery processes, and vendor coordination
Change Management & Documentation
- Participate in change control processes for system updates and improvements
- Help establish and maintain control system standards
- Provide support during audits and technical evaluations
Safety & Regulatory Adherence
- Follow all safety procedures and cGMP requirements
- Complete required compliance and technical training programs
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field
- 5–10 years of experience working with industrial automation or control systems
- Experience in regulated or cGMP environments is preferred
Technical Expertise
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming and SCADA systems
- Familiarity with HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, and industrial electrical components
- Experience troubleshooting industrial control systems and networks
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- May require occasional after-hours or emergency support in a 24/5 operation
- Work performed around industrial machinery and electrical equipment
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs. while using proper PPE
