JOB SUMMARY:

The Skate Guard & Scorekeeper plays a role rotating between both positions in supporting safe, organized, and engaging on-ice experiences at the Utah Mammoth Practice Facility. This position is responsible for both monitoring public skating sessionsto ensure guest safety and operating as a scorekeeper during leagues, tournaments, and youth hockey events.

This role requires strong skating ability, attention to detail, quick decision-making, and clear communication. Whether serving as a visible safety presence on the ice or ensuring accurate game operations in the scorebox, this position directly contributes to a professional, fun, and well-run facility experience.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Skate Guard

  • Monitor public skate sessions, stick & puck, and designated on-ice activities.
  • Enforce rink rules and safety policies consistently and professionally.
  • Identify and proactively address unsafe skating behavior.
  • Assist guests who fall or require support while on the ice.
  • Respond quickly and calmly to injuries or emergencies following established protocols.
  • Complete incident reports as required and communicate concerns to management.

Scorekeeper

  • Operate the scoreboard during games, leagues, and tournaments.
  • Accurately track goals, assists (when required), penalties, and game time.
  • Ensure proper timing of periods, stoppages, and penalty clocks.
  • Communicate clearly with referees, coaches, and rink staff regarding scoring or clock issues.
  • Maintain official game sheets and ensure documentation is completed accurately.
  • Support smooth transitions between games and maintain professionalism in the scorebox.

Guest Interaction & Facility Support

  • Provide friendly and professional service to guests, players, coaches, and officials.
  • Answer basic questions regarding rink policies, schedules, and procedures.
  • Assist with rink setup and breakdown for sessions and games.
  • Support opening and closing procedures as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong skating ability required (must be confident skating forward, backward, stopping quickly, and maneuvering in crowded conditions).
  • Prior experience operating a scoreboard or familiarity with hockey game structure preferred.
  • Understanding of hockey rules, penalties, and game flow strongly preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certified or willing to become certified.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and tournament schedules as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to skate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly on ice.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods during games while maintaining focus.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25–50 lbs.
  • Ability to respond physically in emergency situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a cold arena environment, both on the ice and in the scorebox.
  • Noise levels may range from moderate to loud during games and events.
  • The environment is energetic, fast-paced, and highly guest-facing.
  • Work areas may become crowded during peak programming and tournaments.
