About This Position
Summary
The ACLU of Massachusetts (ACLUM) is seeking a full-time Social and Digital Media Associate to join its Communications department. The Social and Digital Media Associate plays an important part in supporting ACLUM’s communications and marketing efforts to advance the organization’s goals. The primary responsibilities for this role include: creating and posting content for ACLUM’s social media channels; managing ACLUM’s publishing calendar for these platforms; creating social media graphics in alignment with the ACLUM brand and copy standards; capturing photo and video content in the field; creating social media toolkits for partners to amplify ACLUM’s messaging; maintaining the department’s digital asset library; and updating ACLUM’s public-facing website. This position reports to the Communications Director and works closely with other ACLUM departments to achieve programmatic objectives.
The ideal candidate for this position brings strong knowledge and experience in creating engaging social media content and a passion for all components of this job, including writing text, designing graphics, taking photos, shooting and editing video, and maintaining content for ready use by various stakeholders. Strong candidates will have demonstrated excellent organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, capability in generating and interpreting social media analytics, and effectiveness in working both independently and collaboratively with colleagues across departments in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties
Content Development and Asset Management
Develop and maintain the departmental calendar for publishing social media content.
Write, edit, design and post high-quality social content to ACLUM’s core platforms on a daily basis, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, and TikTok.
Facilitate the approval process for all social media posts to be posted on ACLUM’s official digital platforms, including reviews by directors across departments and the National ACLU communications team, as applicable.
Capture photo and video content at a wide variety of ACLUM events and activities, including press conferences, rallies, and community engagement initiatives; edit captured content for use in ACLUM social posts, campaign materials, and publications.
Design social media and website graphics in alignment with the ACLUM brand and copy standards.
Create social media toolkits as appropriate for coalition partners and supporters to use in amplifying ACLUM’s work and messaging.
Monitor engagement and comments on ACLUM’s social media platforms.
Keep abreast of developments in the news and draft rapid response posts for ACLUM’s social media on relevant issues, with advance input and review from relevant departments.
Support the Audience Engagement Manager in setting up and monitoring paid social media campaigns.
Monitor and regularly report on social media analytics.
Stay abreast of social media trends and make recommendations for improving ACLUM’s communication strategies and tactics, in collaboration with the Audience Engagement Manager.
Maintain an organized and easily searched library of photos, video, and other digital assets for use on the website and in social media.
Website Maintenance
Maintain legal case pages on the ACLUM website, including explainer content, court documents, and other applicable materials, under the direction of the Communications Director or Senior Communications Strategist and in consultation with the ACLUM legal team.
Set up and maintain topical pages in support of non-litigation advocacy and priority campaigns, as well as fundraising and recruitment efforts, in partnership with the respective departments.
Make other updates to website content as needed and instructed.
Other Responsibilities
Special projects and other tasks, as assigned by the Communications Director.
Qualifications, Experience and Attributes
Minimum of two years of professional experience creating social content and managing multiple social media platforms for a public advocacy, educational, political, nonprofit, or corporate entity.
Associate or bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
Strong video shooting and editing skills, with a focus on short-form content for TikTok and Instagram.
Proficiency in photography and use of photographic equipment and editing applications.
Strong graphic design skills, with a focus on social media graphics across platforms.
Experience with social media scheduling tools; experience with Meltwater preferred.
Proven ability to effectively coordinate content across multiple platforms and publication deadlines.
Proven ability to remain highly organized, with meticulous attention to detail, in a fast-paced environment with tight delivery timeframes.
Experience in pulling and analyzing social media analytics across platforms.
Experience in website management and maintenance; experience with WordPress preferred.
Interest in and aptitude for creative approaches to engaging and growing audiences while remaining tightly aligned with brand voice and values.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
A track record of working well with colleagues at all levels of an organization, as well as high-profile external partners and stakeholders.
Strong belief in the ACLU’s mission and work to defend and strengthen civil rights and civil liberties.

Timeliness and attention to detail in maintaining topical pages and making needed updates on the ACLUM website.
Proactivity in monitoring social media analytics, trends and emerging practices, and identifying ways to amplify ACLUM’s programming and messaging.
Effectiveness in coordination and communication with the department, other ACLUM colleagues, and external partners.

Frequent written and verbal communication, and ability to read and synthesize complex material.
Extensive reading, preparing, and analyzing information, in hard copy and electronic format.
Frequent and extended periods of being in a stationary position, in both an office environment and outdoor venues.
Ability to transport and use digital recording and editing equipment, including photo and video cameras, tripods, microphones, and other accessories.
Ability to frequently and independently travel to various locations across Massachusetts.
Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours when needed, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Compensation
Salary range for this position is $72,000 to $80,000, with consideration for and commensurate with direct experience. Benefits include 401(k) plan plus employer match, medical and dental insurance, and paid vacation and holidays. Reimbursement for mileage may be provided in accordance with ACLUM policies, when applicable.

This position will be based in Boston, MA and eligible for a hybrid work schedule, being in-person an average of three days per week, with the ability to be in the office on any given day as needed and assigned.
