Vice President, Neurosciences

Job Overview:

This role will work collaboratively with the Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurology for Rutgers, along with the key stakeholders from the Medical Group and the executive colleagues from the Service Line, the Vice President for Neurosurgery, the Director of Quality, Regulatory and Safety for Neurosciences and the Chairman of Neurosurgery. As part of the integrated service line efforts, the Vice President of Neurosciences will be accountable for expanding, implementing, and integrating Neurology Services for the member institutions of RWJBarnabas Health. In addition, this leader will help ensure physician and other clinical resources are appropriately onboarded and strategically deployed.

  • Service Line Executive Vice President; Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurology Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School & Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related finance or healthcare field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years progressive experience in project management, finance, healthcare management, and/or strategic planning required; additional years of experience in healthcare financial management/analysis and business planning preferred. Working experience in healthcare and/or similar academic medical center environment strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability:
  • To demonstrate leadership and ability to effectively communicate with executive levels.
  • To build consensus and motivate teams of diverse, multidisciplinary, and multi-departmental stakeholders at varied levels of academic and professional experience.
  • To productively manage politically and financially sensitive issues.
  • To prioritize and deliver on goals and priorities for a service line while contributing to the planning and implementation of institutional priorities.
  • To work independently, as well, as collaboratively at all levels of complex organization.
  • Proactive identification, diagnosis, and timely resolution of issues.
  • Knowledge and experience performing financial management, strategic planning and implementation, business development, space planning, information systems, process improvement, outcomes measurement, reporting, and human resource management functions.
  • Financial and operational analytical skills required, including profit and loss, reimbursement analysis, business trends and process analysis, and identification of system weaknesses.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience in successfully developing and leading a system-wide service line for a medium to large health system and/or medium to large Academic Medical Centers.
  • Experience in working within a Medical School departmental structure.

Essential Functions:

For RWJBH, this leader will oversee the strategic planning process at the system and entity levels, ensuring that the plans create focus and are supported by the leadership team:

  • Lead the targeted, strategic growth of Neurosciences services across the system:
    • Infrastructure: ensure that the system creates tools and processes to manage the Department’s market strategy and priorities in an effective and efficient manner.
    • Physician Practice: collaborate with health system leadership to ensure that the right practice(s) are engaged at the right time and place.
    • Collaborate with system and entity leadership to establish network leadership, including designated dyads and steering groups as appropriate
    • Ensure that goals and scorecards align with service line priorities
  • Coordinate system wide, the strategy and planning for the Neurosciences related services, consistency of standards and developing integrated clinical protocols, educational programs, and strategic growth strategies for the system.
  • Implement with input from physician partners and health system leadership goals aligning with the 8 key elements of the strategic plan: Asset Optimization, Social Disparities, Service Line Growth, Financial Performance, Educational Advancement, Medical Neighborhood Alignment, Marketing & Development, Performance & Quality Indicators.
  • Identify, evaluate and implement new programs in collaboration with the service line leaders, to apply innovation in services, technology and care delivery.
  • Direct oversight in the business planning related to Tele-Stroke Services within RWJBH, with an aim to reduce costs, and improve quality and efficiency for stroke coverage across the system.
  • Participate in developing initiatives for new payer strategies including bundled payments and changing payer status.
  • Develop tools and processes in collaboration with Senior Leadership to improve patient satisfaction, as well, as satisfaction of referring physicians and hospitals.

For Rutgers, this leader will work with the Chairman of Neurology to formulate and implement a framework of the objectives, goals, and policies for the Department of Neurosciences, in addition to ensuring high level of performance of the faculty practices.

  • Strengthen relationships with referring physicians across the System to support a network of coordinated patient care and resolve operational issues that negatively impact care.
  • Promote and build strong relationships with physicians throughout the organization and the community.
  • Foster a team approach by collaborating between departments.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with all internal and external service line stakeholders.
  • Oversees the administrative component of physician contracting and recruitment in collaboration with the RWJBH Medical Group and Rutgers Medical School.
  • Provide physicians and staff the tools they need by participating in planning, negotiations, and purchasing of new capital equipment, as well, as participating in negotiations with vendors and suppliers of existing products and equipment, to achieve favorable pricing.

In addition, this leader will be responsible for the performance measurement and administrative oversight of the Neurosciences Service Line within RWJBH.

  • In collaboration with the service line team, develop and report metrics to analyze the effectiveness of services, including volumes, quality and safety measures, patient satisfaction and financial performance.
  • Monitor operating margin, cost, and revenue within Neurosciences services and manage approved budgets for Neurosciences-related capital across the system.
  • Lead activities aimed at improving high quality care, effective utilization of resources and development of multidisciplinary care teams that meet the needs of the whole patient.
  • Manages Neusorscience service line meetings, Integrated Leadership Groups, and meets regularly with department chair and sub-specialty program directors to ensure effective programs.
