INTRODUCTION:
The Cultural Landscape Steward is a member of the Food Sovereignty Program team and works in partnership with Siletz Tel-tvm’, various committees, Tribal administration, Tribal members, and community members to support the development and care of cultural landscapes. This position provides plant and landscape stewardship services to the Siletz Tel-tvm’ and surrounding Siletz Tribal communities by supporting the harvest, planting, cultivation, and care of traditional first foods and native plants.
Requirements:High school diploma/GED and Six (6) month’s experience working with a community garden or commercial farm/garden -OR- Six (6) month’s experience in horticulture.
Knowledge of:
- Working with indigenous/native communities.
- Basic gardening skills, pruning, and produce harvesting techniques.
- Traditional foods, protections for sensitive habitats, and food sovereignty issues.
- Safe handling and storage requirements of produce.
Experience in:
- Safely working with machinery, tools, mowers, cultivators, saws, or other farm-related equipment.
- Working outdoors for extended periods.
- Wildland fire safety.
- Identifying and gathering traditional foods.
Ability to:
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable communicating in one-on-one and group settings.
- Prioritize duties to build and support the program’s value as a resource for Tribal members.
- Be highly organized, able to work independently, and make accurate estimates of timing and growing conditions required of plants grown by the Food Sovereignty Program.
- Be able to perform physical work required for landscape, field, tool, irrigation, and other property maintenance.
DUTIES:
- Assist with the implementation of stewardship plans including the planting and cultivation of traditional first foods, cultural plants, and materials at Siletz Tel-tvm’ and surrounding communities.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure that all first foods are being properly maintained, cultivated, and disease-free.
- Maintains gathering and tending procedures of traditional foods on the Siletz Tel-tvm’, and surrounding communities.
- Provide information to Tribal members about traditional and locally grown foods.
- Maintain plant database and identification signs throughout the landscape.
- Assist in all planting, harvesting, pruning, burning, cultivation, gathering and other tasks associated with traditional plants.
- Attend and support cultural sharing events.
- Assist Tribal members with access to and relationship with traditional foods, cultural plants, and materials.
- Operate small equipment including two-wheel tractors, cultivators, and lawnmowers, as well as small equipment tools such as chainsaws, string trimmers, and chippers.
- Assist with all aspects of gardening, habitat restoration, events, and other program support tasks.
- Perform custodial duties within assigned work areas.
- Continual learning commitment to cultural competency.
- Perform other Food Sovereignty Program functions as assigned by supervisor.
