About This Position

The Global Experiences Office is seeking an instructor to teach a course on Brain Development and Early Life Stress as part of the Children's Experience of War and Trauma program. Under the direction of the Director of Global Experiences Office, University of Pittsburgh:

  • Develop and manage syllabus materials. The instructor is responsible for developing or revising the syllabus in partnership with the appropriate academic unit, selecting and compiling assignments, lessons, discussion exercises, and tests that permit measurement of performance relative to standardized learning objectives. Assignment, lessons, and examples should utilize examples from the destination location if possible.
  • Coordinate syllabus, courseware, and curriculum with department chair (or their designate) of the host academic unit for the course. The is responsible for reviewing any textbook and other courseware changes with the academic department chair and other full-time faculty teaching the course.
  • Coordinate pre-departure activities and classes, travel logistics, academic site visits, cultural field trips, and any other experiential or academic programming at the destination location with the Director of Global Experiences Office and the designated Program Manager responsible for the program.
    • Instructor will facilitate pre-departure academic and preparation lessons, if required.
    • Ensure out-of-class site visits correspond with the experiential component of the program, meet budgetary constraints, and follow the health, safety, and security guidelines applicable to all Pitt Study Abroad/Study Away programs.
  • Facilitate Class Instruction. The instructor is responsible for teaching the assigned class in accordance with learning objectives and session plan outlines in the syllabus and program itinerary as specified by the home academic unit and the Pitt Global Experiences Office.
  • Evaluate Student Performance. The instructor is expected to administer evaluations of student performance based on course deliverables and course rubrics.
  • Adhere to Risk Management and Preparation Guidelines. The instructor is responsible for participation in any preparation session as determined by the University of Pittsburgh. Training session topics can include best practices, health/safety/security, and logistics.
  • Respond Promptly to Grade Determination. The professor should submit grades for any assignments, discussion board exercises, and exams and course completion. Depending on the course, professor may be required to input final grades into PeopleSoft.
  • Program Expense Tracking and Financial Reconciliation. Submit all receipts, track group discretionary expenses, and complete an expense report in Concur within 30 days of return.
  • Crisis Management. Professor is required to manage and mitigate risk throughout the program as well as provide leadership and coordination in a crisis/emergency situation. All University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff are considered Mandatory Reporters.

Requirements:

  • Terminal degree in subject area
  • Experience teaching field of study
  • Prior experience in destination location is desirable.
  • A clear communicator who provides value-added comments and information to students
  • Able to teach using real-world experience
  • Able to confidently teach and present to a class of students
  • Technologically savvy: can utilize email, a range of online learning systems, and other ways to communicate with students
  • Passionate about specific academic fields and education in general
  • An understanding of the use of curriculum design, pedagogy, and learning outcome alignment
  • Successful in collaborating with colleagues
  • Flexibly, adaptable, and willing to work under pressure in unfamiliar locations
