Job Summary:
The Corporate Controller at AFD Petroleum Ltd. is a key financial leadership role responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance across AFD’s Canadian and U.S. operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this role ensures financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and strong governance within a high‑volume, asset‑intensive, multi-entity environment. The Corporate Controller plays a pivotal role in supporting strategic growth, including capital investments, geographic expansion, and potential M&A activity.

What you will do day-to-day:
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Lead preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for AFD’s Canadian and U.S. entities.
- Ensure compliance with ASPE and relevant cross-border regulatory requirements.
- Oversee year-end audit processes and manage relationships with external auditors.
- Maintain and enhance accounting policies consistent with AFD’s operational reality (fuel distribution, equipment rental, fleet operations, logistics).
- Ensure outside stakeholders are managed/informed to maximize AFD’s position. Banks, auditors, government(s) agencies, insurance, taxation, etc.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee all accounting functions, including GL, AP, AR, inventory accounting, fuel reconciliation, and fixed asset accounting (fuel trailers, service trucks, bulk plants, generators).
- Maintain a disciplined month-end close process and ensure accuracy of intercompany transactions.
- Strengthen internal controls around inventory, fuel management, billing, and capital expenditures.
- Oversee tax compliance and filings across Canadian jurisdictions and U.S. operations.
Operational & Financial Insight
- Partner with Operations Leadership to provide financial visibility into delivery profitability, equipment utilization, margins, and cost drivers.
- Support the CFO and executive team with reporting, variance analysis, and financial insights.
- Develop dashboards and KPIs that help management improve efficiency and decision-making.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting and payroll team.
- Implement clear performance expectations and developmental pathways.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Systems, Technology & Process Improvement
- Oversee and optimize the ERP systems (e.g., fuel tracking, inventory, rentals, work orders, billing).
- Identify opportunities for automation across AP, AR, billing, dispatch, and reporting.
- Streamline accounting and operational workflows to support scalability, transparency, and profitability.
Strategic & Corporate Initiatives
- Support financial modeling, due diligence, and integration activities for acquisitions or divestitures.
- Provide governance and oversight for capital projects, such as facility builds or fleet expansions.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting on growth initiatives, joint ventures, business processes, or new business lines.
What you need to succeed:
Education
- CPA designation required.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or related field; advanced education considered an asset.
Experience
- 7–10+ years of progressive accounting leadership experience, ideally in:
- energy services
- equipment rental
- transportation/logistics
- distribution
- or other asset‑based, multi-location industries
- Experience managing multi-entity accounting and cross-border reporting (Canada/U.S.).
- Strong technical understanding of ASPE and internal control frameworks.
- Proven ability to work closely with operations teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Experience with ERP optimization or implementation preferred.
