Job Summary
The Transportation Surveyor is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and verifying survey data to support transportation planning, roadway design, and infrastructure projects. This role ensures accurate measurements of land, roadways, and transportation corridors to assist engineers, planners, and construction teams in developing safe and efficient transportation systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys for transportation and infrastructure projects, including highways, streets, bridges, and rail corridors.
- Operate surveying equipment such as GPS units, total stations, laser scanners, and data collectors.
- Measure and record distances, elevations, angles, and boundaries to establish control points and project benchmarks.
- Prepare survey reports, maps, plats, and documentation for engineering and planning teams.
- Interpret construction plans, legal descriptions, and transportation design documents.
- Ensure survey data accuracy and compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
- Coordinate with civil engineers, transportation planners, and construction teams to support project requirements.
- Assist with right-of-way surveys, topographic surveys, and construction staking.
- Maintain and calibrate surveying equipment and ensure proper data management.
- Follow safety procedures and field protocols while working in roadway and construction environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, or a related field preferred.
- 2+ years of surveying experience, preferably in transportation or infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of surveying methods, geospatial data collection, and mapping software.
- Demonstrated experience preparing WisDOT Transportation Project Plat (TPP) documents
- Familiarity with WisDOT Facilities Development Manual (FDM) guidelines for Transportation Project Plat (TPP) preparation, parcel mapping, and right-of-way documentation.
- Professional background that includes surveying work for both private clients and Wisconsin Department of Transportation projects, including parcel mapping, plat preparation, and coordination with regulatory agencies
- Experience with CAD software
- Experience with GPS, total stations, and surveying data processing software.
- Understanding of transportation infrastructure and roadway construction practices.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
Preferred Qualifications
- Survey Technician certification or progress toward Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure.
- Experience with GIS software.
- Familiarity with state Department of Transportation (DOT) survey standards, particularly WisDOT or MnDOT.
Work Environment
- A combination of fieldwork and office-based data processing.
- Fieldwork may involve working near roadways, construction sites, and uneven terrain.
- Occasional travel to project sites may be required.
