About John G. Wood School
Our specialized school, John G. Wood (JGW), is just the right size to teach students with emotional and behavioral challenges that impact their academic success. Small student-teacher ratios accommodate individual learning styles with a goal to transition students back to their public school as soon as possible. JGW includes a broad range of courses for children in kindergarten through grade 12 and Extended School Year (ESY) services are available during the summer. Some residents of VHBG’s group homes attend JGW in addition to students who commute from multiple localities in the Richmond region.
Position Summary
The Dean of Students is a member of the school’s leadership team and exercises discretion and independent judgement in matters related to personnel, students, and work assignments. They may serve as the designated school administrator in the absence of the Director.
The Dean of Students is responsible for facilitating a therapeutic environment, leading processes and procedures related to student motivation and accountability, engaging in stakeholder contact, participating in staff training, and working in compliance with DOE, VAISEF, and IEP requirements.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Safe & Therapeutic Environment:
- Takes steps to maintain a safe and secure and nurturing school environment
- Protects the academic instructional time from unnecessary interruptions
- Directs behavior management, student suspension and discharge, and crisis intervention practices
- Facilitates student reintegration after suspension
- Staff development instructor for practices related to behavior intervention and therapeutic holds
- Manages arrival and dismissal procedures
Student Motivation & Accountability
- Leads processes and procedures related to student motivation systems (including incentives, rewards, and consequences)
- Facilitates student council and student leadership roles
Stakeholder contact:
- Ensures quality of parental involvement and/or family engagement, and stakeholder contact and communication
Staff Engagement & Development for Direct Reports (classroom student support coaches and 1-1 coaches)
- Responsible for staff selection, onboarding, training, supervision, coaching/counseling, time off approvals, termination, and other personnel related issues
- Provides and ensures supportive supervision occurs in accordance with Positively Managing Performance
Quality improvement:
- Reviews outcome reports and other sources of data about program performance
- Works with team to plan action steps for improvement
Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Required Experience and Education:
- Hold a degree from an accredited college or university
- Have at least two years of experience working with students with disabilities.
- Experience in a private day school
- Experience supervising others
- Must be able to successfully clear background checks associated with job and must successfully complete in-house training

Working hours are 7:30am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday
8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
