Brief Job Overview/Summary

The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) department at Stockton University is seeking dedicated and empathetic Peer Mentors. Peer Mentors work collaboratively to respond to student needs, promote personal wellness, raise awareness, provide education, and serve as a resource to students on a wide variety of mental health issues including suicide education and prevention. Peer Mentors meet individually with students to discuss lighter concerns, link to Counseling Services, when necessary, as well as link to college, community resources, and/or peer advocacy. They also provide outreach programming to the college community on various mental health topics.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Attend Peer Mentor Training Session:
• Guidelines for communicating with students
• Certified Peer Educator
• Question. Persuade. Refer (QPR) and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSRS) training for suicide prevention
• On/Off campus resources and providing referrals

Peer Led Groups:
• Lead and facilitate peer-led groups focusing on topics such as anxiety, stress relief workshops, and cultural groups
• Foster a supportive environment where students can openly discuss their experiences and challenges
• Facilitate safe and inclusive peer led LGBTQ groups or workshops

Let’s Talk Programming:
• Coordinate and participate in Let’s Talk sessions, offering informal, drop-in consultations to students seeking support and guidance

Tabling at Orientation, Open Houses, Fairs:
• Represent the Peer Mentor program at campus events to provide information and resources to incoming and current students
• Engage with prospective students and families to promote a welcoming campus environment

Social Media Posts:
• Create and share engaging social media content to promote upcoming events, resources, and peer support initiatives
• Utilize platforms effectively to reach and connect with a wide audience of students

Office Hours:
• Hold regular office hours where students can book appointments or walk in to discuss academic, personal, or social concerns
• Provide one-on-one mentoring and referrals to campus resources as needed

Organize Workshops and Presentations:
• Develop and organize workshops and presentations on topics such as stress management, test-taking anxiety, and other relevant issues
• Collaborate with campus partners to deliver informative and interactive sessions that support student success and well-being
• Facilitate dog therapy events and outreach; promote dog therapy services
• Current enrollment as a full-time undergraduate and graduate student at Stockton University.
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting peers and promoting student success
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a dynamic environment
• Sensitivity to and respect for diverse identities and experiences within the university community

Required Qualifications:

• Current enrollment as a full-time undergraduate and graduate student at Stockton University
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting peers and promoting student success
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a dynamic environment
• Sensitivity to and respect for diverse identities and experiences within the university community
