Job Description

Sr. Substation Engineer

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Sr. Substation Engineer in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects that support critical power infrastructure across utility, renewable, industrial, and telecommunications sectors. You will take a leading technical role in both physical and protection & control (P&C) engineering activities, ensuring safe, reliable, and high-quality electrical system performance. Working within small, multidisciplinary teams, you will collaborate closely with engineers and project stakeholders to deliver end-to-end substation solutions. The position combines hands-on engineering design with project coordination responsibilities, including technical reviews, calculations, and construction documentation. You will also play a key role in ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements while supporting project execution from concept through delivery. This is a highly impactful role for an experienced engineer looking to shape complex energy infrastructure projects in a fast-evolving sector.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will lead and support the technical execution of substation engineering projects, contributing to both physical design and protection & control systems. You will be responsible for producing high-quality engineering deliverables while ensuring compliance with industry standards and project requirements.

  • Develop conceptual designs, execution plans, cost estimates, and project schedules for substation projects
  • Produce detailed engineering deliverables including one-line diagrams, schematics, layouts, grounding, and wiring designs
  • Prepare calculations, studies, reports, and technical documentation for high-voltage power systems
  • Perform quality reviews of engineering work completed by peers to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structural, transmission, and P&C) to deliver integrated project solutions
  • Track project progress and provide regular updates on milestones, timelines, and completion status
  • Support construction documentation and technical delivery across all phases of substation projects
Requirements

The ideal candidate is an experienced substation engineer with strong technical expertise in high-voltage systems and protection & control design. You are comfortable working in collaborative environments and managing multiple technical responsibilities with precision and accountability.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • PE license (required)
  • 7+ years of experience in substation or power delivery engineering
  • Strong expertise in protection & control design and high-voltage substation systems (12kV–500kV)
  • Experience producing electrical design deliverables such as schematics, layouts, and wiring diagrams
  • Knowledge of IEEE, IEC, NESC, and other applicable engineering standards
  • Familiarity with substation equipment, grounding systems, and electrical design principles
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage technical deliverables in a fast-paced project environment
  • Experience with power system studies (e.g., voltage drop, cable selection, battery sizing) is a plus
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package aligned with experience and qualifications
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and life insurance coverage
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Paid time off (PTO) and flexible leave options
  • Professional development and career advancement opportunities
  • Exposure to large-scale, high-impact energy infrastructure projects
  • Collaborative, engineering-driven work environment
  • Equal opportunity workplace with strong commitment to inclusion and fairness
