About the Role:

The Phlebotomist I plays a critical role in the healthcare system by performing blood collection procedures with precision and care to support accurate diagnostic testing. This entry-level position involves interacting directly with patients to collect blood samples while ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process. The role requires strict adherence to infection control protocols and proper handling of specimens to maintain sample integrity. The Phlebotomist I collaborates closely with laboratory personnel and healthcare providers to facilitate timely and accurate laboratory results. Ultimately, this position contributes to effective patient diagnosis and treatment by providing high-quality specimen collection services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a phlebotomist (e.g., through ASCP, NHA, or equivalent).
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology related to blood collection.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain patient confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a clinical or laboratory setting performing phlebotomy.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience working in diverse patient populations.
  • CPR certification or other relevant healthcare certifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle high-volume workloads efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect blood samples from patients using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques following established protocols.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling and documentation of specimens to maintain traceability and accuracy.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of equipment and work areas to comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Provide compassionate and clear communication to patients to alleviate anxiety and explain procedures.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory promptly while adhering to handling and storage guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures performed and report any adverse events or complications to supervisors.
  • Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments to stay current with phlebotomy best practices.

The required skills enable the Phlebotomist I to perform blood collection accurately and safely, ensuring patient comfort and specimen integrity. Attention to detail is essential for proper labeling and documentation, which prevents errors in laboratory testing.
