Purpose of the Position:
Partnered with Win's Youth Services department, the School’s Out New York City (SONYC) COMPASS Program, funded by the Department of Community and Youth (DYCD), provides a robust academic enrichment program infused with social-emotional support to unhoused youth. The program serves children in grades K-12, offering a safe, trauma-sensitive after/out-of-school learning environment. The COMPASS Program Director is a leadership role responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations of program activities, performance management of staff, and administrative duties to support high-quality service delivery and alignment with DYCD guidelines and procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Program Management
- Partner with the Win’s Director of Youth Services to develop, implement, and manage a trauma-informed afterschool program that aligns with the DYCD operational guidelines.
- Manage program administration duties including scheduling, DYCD workscope preparation, tracking attendance, data entry in DYCD portal, reporting, and file maintenance.
- Oversee a schedule of programmatic activities such as STEM, arts, wellness, and social-emotional learning workshops.
- Evaluate program effectiveness, make necessary adjustments, and ensure continuous improvement.
- Prepare regular reports on program activities, accomplishments, and challenges for management and stakeholders.
- Staff Supervision and Training
- Interview, hire, onboard, train, and supervise a team of afterschool program staff, including the SONYC Site Supervisor, Youth Program Coordinator, Youth Program Associates, and an Activity Specialist.
- Provide ongoing support, feedback, and professional development opportunities to enhance staff performance and ensure high-quality program delivery.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes teamwork, creativity, and a commitment to the program's goals.
- Outreach and Community Building
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, trauma-sensitive environment that is safe, identity-affirming, where participants feel a sense of belonging.
- Execute an outreach plan in partnership with Win’s Program Services team to attract new participants and keep current families engaged in program offerings.
- Establish and enforce program policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of all participants and staff. Schedule intervention meetings with Program Services and families to address social-emotional concerns.
- Develop positive relationships with participants and caregivers, maintaining open lines of communication and addressing any concerns or issues that may arise.
- Budget and Subcontractor Management
- Support Director of Youth Services with onboarding subcontractors, managing the DYCD budget, and tracking processing of contractual documents.
- Timely communication
Requirements:
- Master's degree in education, child development, or a related field. A master’s degree in progress will be considered.
- An enthusiastic collaborator committed to championing access and equity for families within communities that do not receive adequate funding or resources.
- Must be able to work late evenings, all federal holidays, and occasional weekends as required by the program.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in program management, preferably in an afterschool or youth development setting.
- Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, training, and performance management.
- Strong understanding trauma-sensitive practices, youth development, and community building among individuals impacted by trauma.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with staff, parents, and community stakeholders.
- Ability to pass background checks and meet any certification requirements.
