About This Position

Put the pedal to the...purpose! Be our new Shelter Medical Driver for our Gateway Shelter team in Albuquerque!

SCHEDULE and LOCATION
The shelter is located at 7440 Jim McDowell Rd and this role will take you throughout the area to specific drop off locations. This is full-time, Monday-Friday and may include weekends and holidays as needed to keep the shelter going.

*Schedules are sometimes subject to change to meet the needs to the shelter.

ABOUT GATEWAY WEST
Gateway West is Albuquerque’s largest shelter, serving an average of 600 people per night, with cold winter nights bringing in more than 700 people, offering a safe and welcoming environment to people experiencing homelessness. The center is open year-round, offering meals, a warm overnight bed, and secure under-bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. The team provides easy access to trauma-informed services such as case management, job searching, and other supportive services. The team's goal is to guide guests through a successful exit from the shelter to safe, stable housing and a plan for ongoing support.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
You ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for shelter residents, including medical appointments, prescription pick-ups, and transportation during suspension periods. You support the shelter’s operations by assisting with general tasks and stepping into other roles as needed.

  • Drive with purpose. Operate the shelter shuttle to safely transport residents to medical appointments, pick up prescriptions, and handle suspension-related travel needs.
  • Stay ready for the unexpected. Follow scheduled routes while responding to urgent or crisis transport requests, ensuring medically fragile residents receive priority care.
  • Champion safety and reliability. From pre- and post-trip vehicle checks to assisting residents with boarding and seat-belt use, create a secure and professional experience for all passengers.
  • Adapt to various weather conditions. Drive in varying weather, being aware of road conditions and how to drive strategically between locations.
  • Keep careful documentation. Attention to detail and follow-through are key to keep proper incident reports, trip logs, passenger rosters, and communication with leadership.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT SHELTER DRIVER?

  • You are an experienced, safe driver who has operated passenger vans/busses. You operate vehicles with confidence, follow traffic laws and safety protocols, and hold a valid driver’s license (with the ability to obtain a City Operator’s Permit). You can adapt to various weather conditions.
  • You are known for your flexibility, patience, and compassion. You understand the unique needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, including medically fragile clients, and respond to medical or vehicular emergencies calmly and efficiently.
  • You are dependable, detail-oriented, and accountable. You keep accurate trip logs and incident reports, ensuring every transport is documented and every resident’s safety is prioritized.
  • You are adaptable and part of the team. You are willing to jump in to assist with other tasks related to shelter operations when not driving.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Driver’s License Obtain City Operators Permit High School Diploma or GED and two (2) progressive years of experience in general office procedures and customer service and driving BENEFITS
