Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s College of Medicine is seeking to hire a Coordinator, College of Medicine (COM) Clinical Skills. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
  • Manages and prioritizes necessary tasks for the planning, execution, and assessment of the longitudinal Clinical Skills (CS) course across the M1, M2, and M3 years of the College of Medicine (COM) curriculum.
  • Utilizes proactive and effective communication and collaboration with module directors and Medical Education staff on coordinating scheduling of student educational sessions.
  • Notifies supervisor of operational problems that may arise, and assists in implementation of any necessary changes.
  • Creates and posts module, student, and didactic session schedules for the M1 and M2 Clinical Skills course.
  • Facilitates and communicates changes and resolves issues as they arise, in communication and collaboration with the CS director and the Simulation program.
  • Coordinates clinical skills activities at multiple sites within the Simulation Department and COM.
  • Facilitates logistics of educational session delivery, such as planning and reserving teaching space, creating and distributing access to remote teaching sessions, planning for and disseminating any necessary recordings, learning materials, or other resources deemed necessary for the course to students and faculty.
  • Oversees the creation and distribution of all M1 and M2, practice and exam schedules, in collaboration with Simulation program staff as well as module directors, Clerkship coordinators and faculty, and Medical Education staff.
  • Creates and maintains the Clinical Skills Canvas site, along with any other methods of communication/documentation of student schedules and task completion as necessary (Google docs, Outlook calendars, etc.).
  • Participates in ongoing professional development in the use of Canvas, Learning Space, EValue, ExamSoft, and potentially other LMS and software products utilized in the CS course and the COM.
  • Provides orientation and ongoing proficiency training on these platforms to students and other Med Ed staff when needed.
  • Participates in the grading process and prepares final grades for submission.
  • Monitors the student formative and summative evaluations and maintains confidential, complete and accurate student files.
  • Creates data analysis reports using MS Excel and PowerPoint, and analyzes pooled data for quality control and ongoing curricular planning purposes.
  • Oversees the schedule and management of senior medical students who are participating in the Clinical Skills Teaching Elective.
  • Collaborates with CS Director on when and how senior students can be effectively utilized for near-peer instructional and feedback purposes.
  • Provides orientation to senior students on the elective, including expectations regarding rubric-based assessment of M1 and M2 learners, the provision of narrative feedback, and the professional development of teaching skills.
  • Serves as liaison for the “long distance” learning and teaching portion of Senior Elective, and alerts M4 students and CS director if requirements are not being met.
  • Prepares and maintains individual student portfolios and compiles narrative feedback for completion of M1 and M2 competency based evaluations.
  • Identifies when there is a need for senior tutors, schedules senior tutors when necessary, and facilitates their timesheet collection and completion.
  • Develops and maintains a central database of simulated patient cases for use in future course development, organized by organ system, patient demographics, and applicable learning objectives. Assists module directors and faculty with searching the database and utilizing cases across the preclinical curriculum.
  • Assists with ongoing curricular design and implementation of these cases across the M1 and M2 years.
  • Develops and maintains understanding of curricular goals, policies, and standards of the program as necessary to support the continuous quality improvement of the course.
  • Assists the director and assistants with development of course material, student resource assignments, and assessment tools.
  • Collaborates with the CS Director, module directors, and the Office of Health Advancement in the development of course content and session level learning objectives.
  • Maintains familiarity with the medical school calendar and courses offered.
  • Attends professional development activities when needed.
  • Maintains proficiency with electronic tools utilized in the Clinical Skills program for training, management and assessment of students.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with Learning Space and EValue software.
  • Assists module directors in course development and curriculum implementation in absence of supervisor.
  • Assists the Office of Medical Education in proctoring exams when required.
  • Assists with various student orientation activities.
  • Answers telephone and directs calls.
  • Interacts by telephone, letter, e-mail or in person with faculty, staff and students.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
  • Related duties as required.
