As Principal CPA, Director of Tax, you will manage a portfolio of business and individual clients while overseeing end-to-end tax strategy, compliance, and planning. You will serve as a trusted advisor, helping clients navigate complex tax decisions and optimize financial outcomes. The role blends hands-on technical work with strategic consulting and people leadership. You will also guide a small team of tax professionals, ensuring high-quality deliverables and strong operational execution. - Serve as the primary advisor for a portfolio of business and individual clients, ensuring strong relationships and high client satisfaction
- Oversee end-to-end tax compliance and planning, including preparation and review of corporate and individual tax returns
- Provide strategic tax guidance, including entity structuring, compensation planning, retirement strategies, and tax optimization opportunities
- Conduct tax research across federal and state income, payroll, and sales tax matters to ensure compliance and accuracy
- Develop tax projections, scenario modeling, and strategic financial analyses using tax software tools
- Manage client communications, including responding to inquiries, handling tax notices, and advising on regulatory matters
- Lead and mentor a team of tax professionals, including managers and staff accountants, ensuring performance and development
- Establish and monitor KPIs to ensure quality, efficiency, and compliance across the tax function
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, documentation, and quality control across all client deliverables
Requirements:
- Active CPA license with 8+ years of experience, primarily in public accounting serving diverse client portfolios
- Strong expertise in both personal and business taxation, including compliance and strategic planning
- Proven experience managing client relationships independently in a consulting or advisory capacity
- Excellent communication skills with a professional, client-focused approach
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and high-quality deliverables
- Proactive mindset with strong organizational and deadline management skills
- Experience mentoring or managing junior tax professionals or small teams
- Familiarity with cloud-based accounting systems such as Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage, or NetSuite
- Experience with tax preparation software and practice management tools
- Strong understanding of current tax regulations and a commitment to continuous learning
