Job Description
Summary/Objective
The CNC Machinist – Turning is a key role responsible for producing precision components using CNC turning equipment within a job shop manufacturing environment. This position demands deep technical knowledge, attention to detail, and hands-on experience operating and programming CNC lathes. The machinist will interpret complex blueprints, set up machines, and maintain tight tolerances of ±.0004" to ensure parts meet strict quality and customer specifications. With a focus on quality, efficiency, and safety, this role is essential to the success of production operations.
Essential Functions

- Set up and operate CNC turning machines (specifically Mazak and Doosan lathes) in accordance with detailed production instructions.
- Program CNC machines using G-code and Fanuc controls with minimal supervision.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine machining requirements.
- Monitor production runs and make machine adjustments to ensure tolerances of ±.0004" are maintained.
- Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
- Conduct routine preventative maintenance and minor troubleshooting on CNC machinery.
- Collaborate with other machinists, supervisors, and quality personnel to resolve production or quality issues.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with safety and housekeeping standards.
- Track part completion and inventory status using bar code scanners or ERP interfaces.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and suggest tooling or workflow enhancements.
Competencies
- Extensive knowledge of CNC turning operations in a job shop environment
- Demonstrated proficiency with Mazak and Doosan CNC lathes
- Experience using Fanuc controls
- Ability to maintain ±.0004” tolerances consistently
- Strong blueprint reading and G-code interpretation skills
- Familiarity with inspection tools and quality control practices
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capabilities
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and safety
- Team-oriented with solid communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This role operates in a job shop manufacturing environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, cutting fluids, and industrial noise. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times on the shop floor.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and manual handling of materials. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work as required to meet production schedules.

No travel is expected for this position.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience as a machinist, specifically with CNC turning machines.
- Strong understanding of machining processes and techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical certification in machining or a related field.
- Experience with programming CNC machines using G-code.
- Familiarity with quality control processes and inspection tools.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Mazak and Doosan CNC lathes (minimum 5 years)
- Minimum 10 years of experience using Fanuc controls
