Meter Service Worker II- Full Time
Public Works Department

Keep Vienna running—one connection at a time. The Town is seeking a dependable, hands-on Meter Service Worker II to help maintain accurate water service, support residents, and keep our utility systems operating smoothly every day.

The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform semi-skilled and manual lead work in the activities provided by the Meter Reader Division. Work involves repairing and operating the meter and computerized data collection systems and collecting water sample and timetables

Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, or indoors depending on individual work assignments. Work environment includes exposure to noise, dust and traffic with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects and operating equipment.

In addition to manual labor, this position may require use of a variety of power tools and operate trucks and other pieces of equipment.

This position may also be required to respond to water distribution system emergencies outside of normal working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

During declared snow or weather-related emergencies, this position may be required to work extended shifts, including 12-hour operational periods, to support continuous utility operations.

This job may prepare an incumbent for career progression by gaining additional, more complex, skills.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Work Schedule
Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Overtime as necessary and mandatory during emergency situations

All new employees must satisfactorily complete a background check. A conditional offer of employment may then be made contingent upon the successful completion of a physical exam that includes drug testing



This is an Non-Exempt Position.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Essential Functions:

Reads meters; drives truck to several locations; walks from house to house reading meters; unloads data from handheld computer to the main computer; logs finished route.

Coordinates customer complaints and routine work order; troubleshoots, determines, and discusses problems with customers.

Troubleshoots inside/outside water leaks, replace meters, and install radio reads.

Explains Town policies and procedures with customers; delivers and explains yellow notices which are warning notices about late payments, and red notices which are nonpayment notices; turns meter on and off when required; works with customer service to resolve meter reading errors.

Receives and reviews records and reports such as account repair location and data, work orders from Finance Department and supervisor, work order from other Meter Service Workers, and inventory on water meters.

Inspects new construction projects and performance for adherence to Town construction specifications.

Estimates materials and equipment needs.

Additional Duties:

Disassemble old meters

Attends water treatment training classes.

Assumes responsibility for care of equipment, tools, and vehicles used.

Performs related work as assigned.

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Minimum Training and Experience

Requires a high school diploma or GED Equivalent and one to two years of experience in meter reading or mechanical repair work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Valid State driver’s license.
