About This Position
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To plan and manage the Wine & Spirits Department so as to promote sales and achieve profit margins and labor goals. To contribute toward ensuring a positive shopping environment for customers and a positive working environment for employees.
NATURE AND SCOPE: Emphasis in this position is on ongoing department planning, execution and evaluation in order to ensure maximum sales and profit opportunities, effective cost control, efficient utilization of labor and strong customer service levels. The primary challenge is consistently meeting or exceeding department profit and labor goals. This position is responsible for providing effective training, development and work direction for department employees and requires the ability to encourage individual and group effort toward department objectives. This position requires ongoing judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, listening skills, reading, writing, math, moderate to heavy lifting, walking and the operation of forklift, pallet jack and box cutter. Position functions and hours may vary according to business needs. The Store Director provides assignments and work direction.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS- Implement and maintain coordinated, aggressive and creative merchandising plans, using Company guidelines which maximize sales, variety and gross profit
- Consistently monitor mix of demand and profit items, shelf allocation, variety, movement and stock levels to properly order, merchandise and meets sales and gross profit goals
- Collaborate with vendors on approved space allocation, display and deal buying, and follow through on product quality and credits as appropriate
- Must be able to sample wine and spirits to determine quality and to make buying decisions
- Supervise wine & spirits employees to ensure efficient labor utilization and effectiveness in meeting department objectives
- Effectively communicate tasks and priorities
- Follow up to ensure proper task completion and adherence to store and department policies and procedures
- Monitor sales per man-hour and payroll, and adjust labor to production and work needs
- Ensure customers receive prompt and friendly service and assistance from all department employees
- Ensure proper product handling to control shrinkage and waste
- Monitor Wine & Spirits Department receiving, invoicing, pricing, shrink control and inventory to ensure proper product control, and that gross profit goals are met
- Supervise and assist to ensure accuracy and organization of receiving function
- Process invoices accurately and timely and check credits and transfer slips for accuracy
- Take accurate inventory
- Collaborate with the Pricing Department to ensure department pricing and signing is accurately maintained for all items, and monitor price sensitive items in the market
- Supervise department safety and sanitation programs
- Ensure all employees are properly trained in equipment use, maintenance and sanitation standards, proper lifting and all related safety rules and procedures
- Ensure no one under 18 years of age operates hazardous equipment
- Conduct department inspections and maintain safety checklist
- Review insurance allocation reports and itemized statements of loss reports
- Perform Wine & Spirits Department personnel functions
- Ensure all new employees are properly trained to ensure competence in position and for possible future development
- Conduct and ensure all probationary and regular performance reviews are completed
- Provide individual and group guidance and encouragement toward department objectives
- Recommend and administer corrective actions as appropriate
- Follow all store and department policies and procedures
