About This Position
Ships, receives, and coordinates the inventory of blood products. Prepares
blood components with related quality control and record keeping. Labels
and verifies the labeling of processed blood and components. Performs
waived and moderate complexity laboratory testing following specific
procedure under minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinates product inventories to assure product availability.
- Prepares blood products for shipment to clients.
- Orders and receives blood products from outside sources.
- Prepares blood components according to FDA and AABB guidelines.
- Performs required quality assurance, implements corrective action when applicable and documents all results.
- Maintains appropriate documentation of all blood components.
- Verifies and checks the accuracy of the labeling of processed blood and components.
- Labels blood and blood products according to standard operating procedure.
- Prepares recovered plasma for shipping, documenting and maintaining appropriate records.
- Reviews records for accuracy.
- Recognizes and troubleshoots by following established protocols and using designated resources.
- Maintains complete and accurate testing records.
- Performs problem solving for telephone calls, equipment and inventory commensurate with training and experience.
- Answers the telephone in a professional manner.
- Provides requested information correctly.
- Routes calls and messages appropriately.
- Maintains confidentiality of donor information.
- Maintains supplies, department instruments and clean work area.
- Identifies and reports patient safety issues.
- Monitors workload and meets expected turnaround times.
- Completes initial training as assigned and maintains and documents competency.
- Keeps current with SBMF policies and procedures. Consistently follows technical and operating policies and reporting requirements.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
- Assists with training of employees or students as directed by the department manager.
- Assists with collecting statistics or other data for department as needed.
- Assists with preparing donor letter packets as directed by department Manager.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires strong interpersonal skills for interactions with internal and external contacts.
- Strong communication skills are essential to answer questions and solve problems.
- Must be available to take call rotation and work independently.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Works in a clean, well-lighted environment with controlled temperature and ventilation. May be exposed to hazardous biologicals, chemical agents, unpleasant odors, and fumes. These exposures are minimal when proper safety procedures are followed.
