About This Position
Description:
OVERVIEW:
Under the supervision of the Lactation Coordinator, provides breastfeeding education, support, and encouragement to pregnant
and breastfeeding participants by telephone, video, individual sessions, or group settings; maintains records, supplies, and
equipment, including breast pumps. This is a non-exempt position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with breastfeeding problems outside of the Peer Counselor’s scope of practice.
- Provide breastfeeding counseling to high-risk participants referred to the IBCLC on WIC WISE.
- Mentor peer counselors and Dietetic Interns, providing observation of routine consults.
- Input breast pump prescriptions on the prescription dashboard.
- Maintain a high-risk caseload on the Database.
- Travel to other sites as needed for consults and support Breastfeeding Café in Los Banos.
- Provide technical and emotional support to breastfeeding mothers in a variety of settings as assigned – services may be faceto-
- face in the office, online video, at the hospital, or over the phone.
- Refer mothers as needed to the Nutritionist, Physician, public health programs, or community agencies.
- Conduct program outreach activities as directed.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Some college is required. Must possess IBCLC certification.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; computer literacy; accurate maintenance of records.
- Knowledge of WIC Program basics, breastfeeding benefits, support, community resources, and other social services.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with staff and clients.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Commitment to excellent community service
- Spanish speaker preferred
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid California driver’s license and proof of minimum California vehicle insurance.
- Ability to walk, stoop, and squat as needed; be able to lift and carry more than 40 pounds regularly and to sit and
- keyboard/and or write (fine hand manipulation) as much as 75 % of scheduled time.
