Responsibilities
The Medical Coder Trainer is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive training programs for medical coding staff, ensuring consistent application of coding guidelines, and supporting quality improvement initiatives through targeted education. This role ensures coding accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements while serving as a subject matter expert for the coding team.
Key ResponsibilitiesTraining Development and Delivery
- Conduct bi-monthly Coder Refresher training sessions
- Provide comprehensive onboarding training for new coding staff on all coding rules and standards
- Design and deliver regular training sessions for continuing education
- Develop customized training programs on coding guidelines and best practices
- Lead calibration sessions with Operations leaders to ensure consistent coding practices
Curriculum and Materials Management
- Develop, update, and maintain training materials based on current coding guidelines and best practices
- Create educational resources, job aids, and reference guides
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for coding processes
- Ensure all materials reflect current coding policies and procedures
- Compile relevant case examples from completed and live claims for training purposes
Quality Improvement and Analysis
- Monitor and analyze coder error trends from monthly QA results
- Identify opportunities for targeted training interventions
- Create action plans to address recurring issues
- Participate in coding audits and quality improvement initiatives
- Stay current with coding guidelines and updates
Consultation and Collaboration
- Serve as a subject matter expert for coding staff
- Provide timely responses to medical coders' questions
- Offer guidance on complex cases and interpretation of coding guidelines
- Collaborate with department leadership to identify training needs and knowledge gaps
- Coordinate with Operations teams to implement coding guideline changes
- Facilitate cross-departmental meetings to address coding challenges and solutions
- Serve as liaison between coding staff and management for process improvements
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Professional certification such as CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
- 3-5 years of experience in medical coding
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
- Proficiency in medical coding guidelines, including pre-2021 and post-2021 E/M guidelines
- Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Knowledge of healthcare compliance regulations (HIPAA)
Training & Instructional Skills
- Experience conducting both one-on-one and group training sessions (up to 50+ participants)
- Ability to develop and deliver comprehensive coding training materials and curricula
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for creating training materials and analyzing trends
- Experience with virtual training platforms and various instructional methods (workshops, presentations, self-paced modules)
Technical Expertise
- Knowledge of workers' compensation and state guidelines
- Experience with coding audits and quality improvement processes
- Ability to interpret and explain complex coding concepts clearly
