Microbiologist

Job Description Summary:
The Microbiologist reports to the Quality Supervisor. The Microbiologist is responsible for overseeing the implementation, analysis, documentation, and communication of microbial finished product and environmental testing, as well as the quality of incoming raw materials. The Microbiologist is also responsible for assisting with Quality Control activities such as pulling line samples, hold samples, laboratory testing of samples (sodium, total solids, pH, viscosity, package integrity, reagents, calibrations, temperature monitoring), and other assigned duties as determined by the Quality Supervisor or Quality Manager.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Microbial Testing and Release:

The primary responsibility of the Microbiologist is the testing and release of finished product, as well as the organization and implementation of the environmental testing program. Communication with other departments is necessary for meeting customer expectations regarding the release of product, as well as with resolving issues with environmental contamination. The Microbiologist is also responsible for organizing additional testing to support holds, incidents, or material issues.

  1. Certificates of Assurance:

The secondary responsibility of the Microbiologist is the acquisition and analysis of Certificates of Assurance from ASP material suppliers. The Microbiologist is responsible for understanding the requirements that ASP has for accepting raw materials for manufacturing, reviewing and comparing the CoAs to material specifications, releasing materials for use in production and communicating raw material issues that may affect production with appropriate staff.

  1. Additional Testing:

The tertiary responsibility of the Microbiologist is routine finished product testing. The Microbiologist must be trained on all finished product testing as performed by the Technicians, and is expected to assist the Technicians when there is a shortage of labor, or as needed to support breaks and lunches.

  1. Compliance/Quality System:

Knowledge of Document Control Program, Hold & Release Program, Pest Control, Water Testing. General familiarity with SQF and the HACCP Program. Ensure compliance of lab and cleanliness is maintained throughout shifts.

  1. Support:

Each team member is to expected to work together as a team, coordinating the workload of the lab and distribution of breaks and lunches as needed. Each tech is expected to participate in Quality meetings and pursue cross-training across all tasks in the lab.

Requirements:

  • Education equivalent to a minimum of a 4-year degree in a relevant field, 5+ years relevant experience (further degrees may be considered in lieu of experience)
  • Better Process Control School certified (certification may be gained after hiring)
  • Understanding of FDA/USDA regulations regarding manufacturing, excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
