Concrete Finisher and Form Carpenter

  • Location: Johnstown, PA.

  • Job/Employment Type: Full Time.

  • Schedule: Monday Friday (Overtime and weekends as required).

  • Project Scope: Residential and Commercial Concrete Construction.

  • Mandatory Licences & Certifications: Valid PA Driver's License.

Position Overview: Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete, such as floors, sidewalks, curbs, and driveways using a variety of hand and power tools. Must also be able to set forms and cut expansion joints.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety:
    • Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.

    • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials.

    • Operate or maintain air monitoring or other sampling devices in confined or hazardous environments.

    • Wear proper safety equipment including long pants, boots, and protective goggles, ear plugs, hard hats, gloves, etc.

    • Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to be certain items are in proper working order.

    • Obey traffic laws, wear seat belts, and operate vehicles and machinery in a safe manner.

  • General Work:
    • Read plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities.

    • Load, unload, or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications.

    • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed.

    • Lubricate, clean, or repair machinery, equipment, or tools.

    • Provide assistance to other workers, such as laborers, masons, etc. as needed.

    • Subject to loud noises, moving equipment and chemical contaminants

  • Excavation:
    • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, tampers, or rakes.

    • Install drainage pipes and assist with excavation duties as needed.

    • Position, join, align, or seal pipes

  • Concrete Work:
    • Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.

    • Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.

    • Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.

    • Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.

    • Direct the casting of the concrete and supervise laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it.

    • Produce rough concrete surface, using broom.

    • Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.

    • Clean the chipped area, using wire brush, and feel and observe the surface to determine if it is rough or uneven.

    • Signal truck driver to position the truck to facilitate pouring concrete and move chute to direct concrete on forms.

    • Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure the surface of concrete, and waterproof or restore the surface.

    • Operate power vibrator to compact concrete.

    • Chip, scrape, and grind high spots, ridges, and rough projections to finish concrete, using pneumatic chisels, power grinders, or hand tools.

    • Cut out damaged areas, drill holes for reinforcing rods, and position reinforcing rods to repair concrete, using power saw and drill.

    • Waterproof or restore concrete surfaces, using appropriate compounds.

    • Wet surface to prepare for bonding, fill holes and cracks with grout or slurry, and smooth, using a trowel.

    • Install anchor bolts, steel plates, door sills and other fixtures in freshly poured concrete or pattern or stamp the surface to provide a decorative finish.

    • Build wooden molds, and clamp molds around the area to be repaired, using hand tools.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Valid PA Drivers License

  • Physical

  • Strong physical capability: Job involves climbing, lifting, balancing, twisting, walking, stooping, and handling of materials

  • Cell phone

  • High School graduate preferred

  • Jobs may require overtime hours and weekend work
