About This Position

Description:

The School Social Worker supports students’ academic success by addressing social, emotional, behavioral, and environmental factors that impact learning. This position provides assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, and consultation services in alignment with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 plans, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). The School Social Worker collaborates with educators, families, and community partners to promote student well-being, inclusive practices, and equitable access to education. This role ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including IDEA and school-based mental health requirements.

Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW)
  • Valid state School Social Worker license or LCSW, as required
  • Training in trauma-informed practices, SEL, MTSS, and culturally responsive mental health supports
  • Ongoing professional development in ethical practice, crisis response, and inclusive education
  • Knowledge of IDEA, MTSS, SEL frameworks, and school-based mental health practices
  • Strong counseling, crisis response, and case management skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, families, and service providers
  • Strong communication, cultural responsiveness, and documentation skills
  • Ability to support consistent implementation of SEL and behavioral interventions

Preferred:

  • Experience working with students with disabilities and diverse family systems
  • Experience providing school-based counseling, SEL instruction, and behavioral supports
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and community partners

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assessment, Evaluation, and Compliance
  • Conduct social-developmental histories and contribute to multidisciplinary evaluations
  • Provide input on social-emotional, behavioral, and environmental factors impacting learning
  • Develop IEP goals, service plans, progress monitoring systems, and required documentation
  • Support compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and school-based mental health requirements
  • Intervention, Mental Health, and Direct Student Support
  • Provide individual and group counseling aligned with IEP goals and student needs
  • Deliver crisis intervention, risk assessments, and safety planning using trauma-informed practices
  • Implement SEL, coping skills, and behavior support interventions
  • Support students in developing self-advocacy, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills
  • Collaboration, Inclusive Practices, and Teaming
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, eligibility determinations, and IEP/504 development
  • Collaborate with teachers, special educators, psychologists, therapists, administrators, and families
  • Promote inclusive practices and accommodations that support social-emotional access
  • Coordinate with community agencies to support student and family needs
  • Data-Based Decision Making and Progress Monitoring
  • Use assessment and progress-monitoring data to guide counseling and behavioral interventions
  • Support teams in analyzing SEL, behavioral, and attendance data to inform supports
  • Maintain accurate service logs, progress reports, and compliance documentation
  • Professional Learning and Family Support
  • Provide training to staff on trauma-informed practices, SEL strategies, and behavior supports
  • Offer consultation to support consistent implementation of social-emotional interventions
  • Provide family education and support to help caregivers navigate special education and mental health systems

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide direct and indirect social work services to students in accordance with IEPs, 504 plans, and MTSS frameworks
  • Conduct assessments and develop intervention plans to address social, emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with federal, state, and school requirements
  • Respond effectively to crisis situations and provide appropriate interventions and referrals
  • Collaborate with school staff, families, and community partners to support student success
  • Participate in required meetings, professional development, and training
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethical standards
  • Use technology and student information systems to document services and track progress
  • Support a positive, inclusive, and safe school environment

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in a school and classroom setting
  • May require movement between classrooms, offices, and other school locations throughout the day
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of up to 25 pounds may be required
  • May require sitting, standing, walking, bending, or reaching for extended period
