Senior Staff Accountant

The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions and supporting the financial reporting, compliance, and operational accounting activities of the organization within a government contracting environment. This role plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the monthly close and audit processes. In addition, the position oversees tax-related compliance activities, including sales and use tax filings, property tax reporting, and business license registrations and renewals, and manages the company’s fixed asset accounting processes, ensuring proper capitalization, depreciation, and reporting of company assets.
Responsibilities:
General Accounting
- Perform and review general ledger accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist in the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate variances.
- Prepare financial reports and analysis for management review.
- Support preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Assist in developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures.
Fixed Asset Accounting
- Maintain and manage the fixed asset subledger, ensuring accurate asset records and classifications.
- Review and determine proper capitalization of assets in accordance with company capitalization policies and GAAP.
- Record asset additions, disposals, transfers, and retirements.
- Calculate and record monthly depreciation and amortization entries.
- Reconcile the fixed asset subledger to the general ledger.
- Maintain supporting documentation for asset acquisitions and disposals.
- Assist with periodic physical inventory of fixed assets.
- Coordinate asset information needed for property tax filings and financial reporting.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment for government contract-funded assets when applicable.
Government Contracting Compliance
- Ensure accounting practices comply with government contracting requirements and regulations.
- Support compliance with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and cost accounting standards where applicable.
- Assist with DCAA audits, incurred cost submissions, and government financial reviews.
- Maintain documentation supporting allowable cost reporting and contract compliance.
- Work with contracts and program management teams regarding financial reporting for government contracts.
Tax Compliance
- Prepare and file sales and use tax returns for applicable jurisdictions.
- Monitor tax obligations and ensure timely filings and payments.
- Maintain schedules and documentation supporting tax filings.
- Assist in responding to tax notices and jurisdiction inquiries.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors on annual tax compliance and reporting.
Property Tax Administration
- Prepare and file business personal property tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Utilize fixed asset records to ensure accurate reporting of taxable assets.
- Track assessment notices and ensure timely payment of property tax liabilities.
- Support responses to property tax audits or inquiries.
Business License Management
- Manage business license registrations, renewals, and compliance filings across multiple states, counties, and municipalities.
- Track filing deadlines and ensure timely submission of renewals.
- Maintain centralized documentation for licenses, permits, and regulatory filings.
Internal Controls & Audit Support
- Ensure adherence to internal accounting controls and procedures.
- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
- Support year-end financial audits and government audit requests.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies within accounting operations.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 4–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in:
- Government contracting
- Professional services or federal contracting environments
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles.
- Experience with fixed asset accounting and depreciation schedules.
- Familiarity with government contracting regulations, including FAR.
- Experience with sales/use tax compliance, property tax reporting, and business license filings.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems (such as Deltek Costpoint, Unanet, NetSuite, or similar).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
