Compensation: $75K-$85K DOE + bonus!

The Spirit of the Position:

The Transportation Safety Manager reports to the National Director of Transportation Safety with a dotted line to Location Leadership (ie. General Manager, Assistant General Manager) and is responsible for facilitating ongoing safety training initiatives for frontline employees, supervisors, and operations managers. This is a high-demand role, with daily interaction between all dedicated location staff classifications and the local leadership team.

The Transportation Safety Manager ensures DOT Compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as ensuring that all LAZs internal safety policies and best practices are met with satisfactory completion. Responsibilities:

  • Manage the locations recurring safety training program, ensuring alignment with Safety Department policies and requirements.
  • Conduct regular driver trainings, evaluations, and road tests; recommend retraining or discipline when necessary.
  • Lead onboarding and new hire training, including safety vetting, driver evaluations, and follow up surveys or quizzes.
  • Conduct safety meetings and trainings for operations teams, covering location specific risks and company wide safety initiatives.
  • Participate in weekly and monthly meetings with the Regional Transportation Safety Team.
  • Perform scheduled and random inspections of drivers, vehicles, and fleet operations to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Complete or support Leadership in submitting accurate accident reports through LAZs TPA platform and meet any client reporting requirements.
  • Review accident trends to identify recurring hazards and recommend mitigation strategies to reduce frequency and severity.
  • Maintain complete and compliant safety documentation, including driver DOT files and vehicle binders.
  • Oversee annual inspections to ensure all safety and compliance documents are prepared and audit ready.
  • Develop, update, and implement training materials and processes, including location specific manuals, driver training, onboarding programs, and manager development.
  • Support Safety, Security, and Training audits, including driver evaluations, site visit reviews, risk assessments, hazard boards, and self assessed audits.
  • Research and recommend new hazard prevention equipment and safety resources.
  • Assist in maintaining a pipeline of qualified candidates for current and future operational needs.
  • Collaborate with the Regional Safety Manager to create and maintain location specific training materials aligned with departmental standards.
  • Partner with HR to reinforce accountability and consistent safety practices at the location.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • TSI and/or Smith System certification preferred.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of transportation, safety, or related experience with emphasis on claims and loss prevention.
  • CDL license is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards and operational demands.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.

Travel:

  • Willing to travel occasionally to support national safety initiatives.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in the elements heat, wind, snow, rain, etc.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability bend, stoop, squat, and lift frequently throughout a shift.
