About This Position

Description:

A Tax Manager is an experienced professional who leads and manages a team of Associates, Senior Associates, and Supervisors to prepare and review tax returns and provide tax-related services.

Essential Duties:

  • Reviews tax returns, related tax forms, projections, workpapers, and transmittals for individuals, trusts, and businesses, which includes: Providing feedback on the preparer's work and ensuring that the work is accurate and complete; Communicates directly with the client to obtain information to complete the tax return and address questions as they arise; Fosters a work environment open to questions and discussion; Send draft of the tax return to the client and address client’s comments; Timely report issues to tax return signer when necessary.
  • Tracks, prioritizes, and communicates the status of multiple projects to ensure due dates are met.
  • Promptly addresses comments from the tax return signer.
  • Analyzes the financial situation of the client and makes recommendations to help the client manage their tax liabilities and to ensure the client complies with tax laws and regulations while keeping the client’s goals in mind.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with clients.
  • Leads department-wide trainings on tax-related topics.
  • Supervises and provides ongoing training for the department, ensuring that all members perform their work in accordance with professional standards and guidelines.
  • Monitors and addresses employee performance and behaviors.
  • Provides coaching, counseling, and corrective action to employees as appropriate.
  • Manages the work schedule of their direct reports to ensure deadlines are met and the work load of the team is balanced and tasks are best suited to the team member's capabilities.
  • Mentors and develops the technical and leadership skills of their direct reports.
  • Participates in manager and management meetings, including the performance evaluation of: Tax Supervisors, Tax Senior Associates, Tax Associates, and Tax Services Administrative team.
  • Assists with the recruitment, hiring, and orienting of Associates, Senior Associates, and Supervisors.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the tax law and regulations, which includes a strong understanding of current and upcoming tax regulations and how it applies to the clients.
  • Conducts research of tax law and regulations to address technical issues and provides recommendations based on the results of research to the tax return signer and clients.
  • Finishes special projects as assigned by management.
  • Identifies and participates in key initiatives and action plans necessary to achieve the goals and objectives of the firm and department.
  • Develops, coordinates, and enforces the firm’s systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
  • Ensures a safe, secure, and legal work environment.
  • Maintains quality service by enforcing quality and client service standards, analyzing and resolving quality and client service problems, and recommending system improvements.
  • Actively participates in firm and industry events, including community engagement activities.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Working Conditions: Indoors. Air-conditioned office. Remote work available.

Requirements:

Work Hours:

  • Generally, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Duties may require overtime. Weekends or additional hours as necessary to meet business needs.

  • Requires holding all confidential information in trust and confidence. The Tax Manager should only use, access, store, or disclose confidential information as appropriate in the performance of their duties for the firm. An employee should comply with all applicable state and federal laws and firm policies relating to access, use, and disclosure of confidential information.
  • Requires analytical ability, attention to detail, concentration, ability to multi-task and alertness.
  • Requires dealing with situations involving changing priorities, complex issues and maintaining cooperative and productive work relationships.
  • Must be able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Requires working in a team setting with other individuals promoting an environment open for discussion and questions.
  • Requires being available for questions from clients or other team members during defined work hours.
  • Requires sitting for prolonged periods during meetings and at other times.
  • Requires working to established procedures and maintaining reliable work attendance.
  • Requires verbal communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting; AND
  • At least 5 years of public accounting experience in tax, including at least 2 years supervising people and/or reviewing the work of others; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience. AND
  • Active Hawaii CPA license.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting; and/or
  • Master’s in Business Administration
