About This Position

Reports to the Manager, Biomed Engineering (MHO). Under general supervision, performs repairs, preventive maintenance, quality assurance, and calibration on a wide variety of biomedical equipment and associated electrical and mechanical systems, in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and other regulatory agencies such as JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations), AAMI, NFPA, and other appropriate standards.

Maintains biomedical and related patient equipment in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and regulatory agency procedures by:

  • Performing preventive maintenance on equipment using standard testing procedures on a scheduled basis.
  • Repairing and testing biomedical and associated equipment through the use of test equipment to verify safety and performance of equipment, analyzing problems, finding causes, making corrections using cost effective means or recommending replacement, alternatives, etc.
  • Maintaining routine records of equipment inspections, repairs performed, coordinating and installing newly purchased equipment according to pre-purchase evaluations.
  • Recording requests for service, time and materials expended.
  • Performing job functions according to established departmental safety and performance procedures.
  • Compiling statistics and trending data to resolve any quality assurance problems and use to evaluate new equipment before purchasing.
  • Training Biomedical team members, Hospital team members, and Physicians on the use of equipment.
  • Keeping work areas orderly, clean, and safe in addition to maintaining tools, test equipment and associated supplies.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department-specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect the patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent level of biomedical technology knowledge. Certification as a Certified Biomedical Electronics Technician (C.B.E.T.) is preferred. A minimum of one to two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of biomedical equipment is required.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires the analytical skills necessary to understand electronic circuitry, mechanical systems and electrical systems. Also must be able to apply this information to analyze and repair equipment malfunctions.
  • Requires the ability to understand and comply with current infection control policies.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, nurses, technologists, Hospital team members, and vendors. Also must be able to gather data and understand problems with equipment.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (data entry, word processing and spreadsheets). A basic understanding of database applications is required.
  • Maintain valid driver's license and have available transportation to travel to and from various work locations when required.

Working Conditions

  • High risk is involved in testing equipment where lethal energy is present.
  • Potential for stressful situations while working with equipment during surgical procedures and meeting unexpected short-term deadlines.
  • May be exposed to contaminated materials while working on various medical equipment.
  • Requires the ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to report to work at locations other Memorial Hospital when needed.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to carry tools, parts, supplies, climb ladders, lift and move equipment, etc.) necessary to perform the essential functions of the position and the eye-hand and fine motor coordination skills necessary to work with detailed electrical and electronic parts and systems.
