Salary: $19.00/hr

Shift: Sunday - Thursday 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM (3rd Shift)

The Auto Mechanic Assistant supports fleet mechanics in performing preventative maintenance, basic repairs, and inspections on a variety of City vehicles and equipment. This position helps ensure fleet vehicles, light and heavy-duty equipment, and small engines remain safe, operational, and available for City departments.
The role involves assisting mechanics with diagnostics, servicing vehicles, maintaining shop organization, and transporting vehicles or parts as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Assist mechanics in performing preventive maintenance and repairs on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform basic servicing tasks such as fueling, cleaning, lubricating, and fluid checks.
  • Assist with tire repairs, battery charging, jump starts, and minor vehicle maintenance.
  • Help inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and proper operation.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness and organize tools, equipment, and workspaces.
  • Track and replenish shop supplies such as oil, coolant, washer fluid, and lubricants.
  • Assist with inventory and stocking of parts and materials received from vendors.
  • Transport, pick up, or deliver vehicles and equipment to different departments or repair locations.
  • Support mechanics during inspections, dismantling, and reassembly of vehicle components.
  • Maintain service records, work orders, and documentation related to maintenance activities.
Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Some experience working in an automotive repair shop or fleet maintenance environment preferred
  • Basic knowledge of automotive tools, maintenance procedures, and shop safety practices
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record may be required
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision of a certified mechanic
Skills & Abilities
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely
  • Strong attention to detail and safety procedures
  • Ability to lift heavy parts and perform physical work
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
