About This Position
Position Summary
The Cardiac Exercise Stress Test Technician is responsible for performing electrocardiogram (ECG) tests on patients while they exercise on a treadmill, monitoring their heart function during exertion, and accurately recording data to assist physicians in diagnosing potential cardiac issues.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
- Prepares patient for stress tests, including patient interviews, obtaining medical history, obtaining patient consent and signatures, and conducting patient teaching related to risks and complications.
- Assesses patient’s resting, stress and recovery vitals.
- Must be proficient in reading EKG and have strong familiarity with abnormal EKGs
- Sets up and monitors patient through 12 lead EKG stress testing including application of 12 lead EKG monitor pads and application leads. EKG Rhythm identification and interpretation.
- Maintains all EKG, exercise stress, pacemaker monitor files and records as required.
- Performs graded exercise stress testing accurately, following the cardiologist’s or cardiology nurse practitioner’s instructions and protocol, using the proper techniques to produce a clear, good quality tracing.
- Recognizes atypical electrocardiogram pattern and determines whether there is any external interferences.
- Writes study reports and recommendations as required by site
- Prioritizes and organizes own workload and routine administrative matters to assure completion of tasks within the time frame designated
- Maintains and cleans equipment
- Performs other related duties as required, attends staff meetings and in-services
- Duties and hours may change according to the needs of the department
- Order clinical supplies when needed
Education & Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year experience in stress testing
- Strong understanding and knowledge of EKG rhythms
- Current BLS certification
- Certified EKG techs preferred

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment
- Ability to remain in stationary position 90% of the time
- Ability to operate computer to access patient’s information
- Ability to communicate with patients, families, and hospital employees effectively
- Ability to explain the procedure to a patient and to obtain patient’s consent
- Ability to use scanner to accurately scan documents and stress test results into a patient’s chart
- Ability to communicate to physicians or nurse practitioners and assist them with basic chart completion procedures
