Brooklyn Grange operates rooftop farms, event venues, and green roof installations across New York City. Our Programming & Events team produces private events and public programming ranging from weddings and corporate gatherings to workshops, dinners, and community events. ABOUT THE POSITION:

Brooklyn Grange, the world's leading soil-based rooftop farming, events, and intensive green roof business, seeks a passionate and organized Bar Captain to help execute successful beverage service and standout customer experience at our events venue atop our rooftop farm in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The right candidate is excited by the idea of helping to execute a farm-to-table beverage program that is as fresh and forward thinking as it is profitable. The beverage program serves mostly private events, along with some public ticketed events.

The Bar Captain will keep a close eye on all aspects of beverage preparation for each event, bartending service, day-of logistics, and bar breakdown including: preparing speciality cocktails, batched beverages, and other beverage service items; ensuring best practices for setup and breakdown of bar; bartending at events and overseeing streamlined and professional beverage service; facilitating positive and safe guest experience; collaborating with our Beverage Manager on farm-to-table cocktail development; and complying with all DOH and SLA laws and regulations.

The Bar Captain should be personable and an excellent communicator, who can comfortably oversee the many details of beverage service and think proactively about next steps. They should be a team player, possessing excellent customer service. They genuinely enjoy hosting people, creating a welcoming environment, and balancing the many moving pieces of working bar service at an event, while proactively supporting their team along the way. They are respectful in all interactions with colleagues, guests, and partner organizations, and take pride in upholding Brooklyn Grange's culture of positivity, friendliness, respect, and professionalism. The Bar Captain will report to the Beverage Manager and collaborate onsite with Event Captains.

SCHEDULE:


Bar Captains will work part time throughout the Season, roughly from April through November, with opportunities to work more as the season ramps up during late Summer through early Fall.

Thursday - Sunday evening shifts regularly anticipated during our primary events season and most hours skewing to the weekends. Additional daytime prep or inventory shifts may be scheduled as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure efficient, professional, and high quality beverage service at all events and programs.
  • Execute in-house beverage program plan and systems. Help update systems as-needed. Be meticulous about best practices and implementing regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as lead bartender at most events at our Sunset Park farm. Set up, execute, and breakdown bar, and model gracious yet efficient beverage service.
  • Help train and support bartenders.
  • Coordinate proactive communication for all bar logistics with Event Captains and catering teams during any events.
  • Collaborate closely with the Event Captain to ensure event readiness, success, and ensure all aspects of the event are following Brooklyn Grange’s policies.
  • Report to Manager on Duty (MOD) when onsite during events.
  • Implement regular cleaning and maintenance for bar.
  • Log cash tips, manage end of shift reports and count cash drawers as needed.
  • Work with the Beverage Manager to execute inventory tracking systems. Receive beverage deliveries, count inventory, reconcile inventory after events.
  • Support Beverage Manager in executing our Beverage Program’s brand and mission of providing high quality, affordable farm-to-glass wine, beer, cider, liquor, and non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Be comfortable preparing batch cocktails and assisting with other beverage preparations when necessary. Assist Beverage Manager with expedited beverage and bar prep for upcoming events.
  • Create a positive and safe guest experience. Welcome guests, answering questions about Brooklyn Grange -- act as a “brand ambassador.”
  • Maintain a professional, helpful presence and enforce farm policies without negatively affecting guest experience.
  • Promptly and politely communicate via email and Slack, and update internal documents, files, and calendars with relevant information.
  • Attends regularly scheduled departmental meetings, as pertains to their role.
  • Collaborate with other departments as needed to ensure the smooth operation of the business, to maintain an aesthetically driven, functional, and welcoming space, and to find opportunities for support and synergy across the company.


OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE :

  • Has prior experience bartending. Specific experience bartending at events venues is a plus.
  • Is familiar with other aspects of beverage program operations, including: tracking beverage inventory, receiving deliveries, setting up and breaking down a bar, and maintaining safe, clean, and professional bar workspaces.
  • Has knowledge of and can comfortably prepare classic cocktails.
  • Is detail oriented, being thorough and precise in all aspects of workflow and beverage preparation.
  • Can set up and break down a bar, can establish best service practices.
  • Is familiar with, or is keen to learn, NYC DOH food safety principles and sanitary bartending service best practices.
  • Has TIPS certification
  • Is a doer: upon finishing a task, will immediately begin undertaking another; thinks big picture while also being attentive to the details. Can multitask and prioritize workload.
  • Is able to lead by example, set a tone of respect, and motivate fellow team members. Can also take direction and work collaboratively.
  • Is a consummate people-person and can thoughtfully and respectfully represent the dynamic events by Brooklyn Grange.
  • Is organized and professional in responding to emails and Slack in a timely fashion. Can navigate Google Drive, MS Excel, record and enter data into spreadsheets, etc.
  • Is able to lift 40 lbs repeatedly, and to squat, bend over, and reach for extended periods of time.
  • Is passionate about sustainable agriculture, food, and beverage.
