About This Position

Description:

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Driver – CDL A (Entry Level) position is designed for newly licensed drivers to build experience through a structured onboarding and development program. This position is responsible for transporting product, as well as loading and unloading vehicles, while progressively gaining independence and demonstrating safe, efficient driving practices in support of the Food Bank’s mission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) - Class A

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Understand DOT and FMCSA regulations
  • Ability to learn Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) and ELD tracking
  • Strong verbal and written communication as it relates to the job
  • Must be customer-centric for both internal and external customers
  • Ability to learn and apply safe driving and material handling practices

Experience:

  • Commercial driving experience not required
  • Experience with warehouse equipment (rider jack and forklift) preferred

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in a structured 12-month training program focused on box truck and tractor/trailer operations
  • Shadow and learn from experienced drivers, progressively performing route and delivery responsibilities under supervision
  • Assist with loading and unloading products using manual and electric pallet jacks, following safe handling practices
  • Provide outstanding customer service during delivery and pickup operations
  • Maintain accurate vehicle and equipment records and learn to utilize DVIR/ELD systems
  • Learn and follow all DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company safety regulations
  • Participate in regular check-ins, evaluations, and feedback sessions with trainers and leadership
  • Effectively represent NTFB in the community, as an ambassador of our values and mission
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned

  • The person in this position needs to be able to read; communicate verbally and/or in written form; remember and analyze certain information and remember and understand certain instructions or guidelines.
  • The person in this position needs to adapt well in the face of workplace stressors such as customer complaints, compliance offenses, meeting deadlines and maintaining the safety of people and property.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Individuals will be subjected to prolonged sitting and driving
  • Ability to regularly lift to 50 lbs. individually, and up to 100 lbs. with the assistance of appropriate equipment and/or co-worker(s)
  • Must be able to successfully operate manual and electric pallet jacks and other warehouse support equipment, following completion of required training.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  • Moderate to loud noise (e.g., medium to heavy traffic in the warehouse with forklifts and pallet jacks)
  • Travel required within our 12-county service area and occasionally outside the area
  • Work schedule is Monday-Friday with occasional Saturdays; typically work the morning shift, but must be flexible with work schedule
  • Must be able to non-hazardous weather conditions, year-round, and in varying internal (hot and cold) temperature levels in the warehouse
