JOB SUMMARY: The SOAR Mentor serves as a peer leader and guide for students participating in the TMCF SOAR program at Kentucky State University. This role provides mentorship, structured guidance, and support to help students navigate their academic, personal, and professional development. Mentors facilitate group discussions, connect students to campus resources, and model professionalism and accountability. The position requires a commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive environment and promoting student engagement and success throughout the program.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide consistent mentorship and guidance to a cohort of students, supporting their academic, personal, and professional development
- Facilitate individual and group check-ins to monitor student progress, set goals, and address challenges
- Serve as a peer leader and role model by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and strong communication skills.
- Assist with the coordination and execution of program activities, workshops, and engagement sessions
- Connect mentees with campus resources, internships, and leadership opportunities to enhance student success outcomes
- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages student engagement, confidence, and community building
- Address student concerns proactively and escalate issues to program staff when appropriate.
- Promote student accountability by encouraging time management, goal setting, and follow-through
- Represent the SOAR program and Kentucky State University, with professionalism and integrity
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build relationships with diverse students.
- Knowledge of campus resources and student support services.
- Leadership and facilitation skills for individual and group mentoring
- Time management and organizational skills
- Problem-solving and critical thinking
- Ability to provide constructive feedback in a supportive manner
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards
- Work independently and collaboratively with program staff
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a current student enrolled at Kentucky State University
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Must be classified as an upperclassman (junior or senior)
- Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university
- Must demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
- Must be able to commit to the full duration of the SOAR program, including residing on campus
- Must exhibit professionalism, reliability, and the ability to serve as a positive role model for peers
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Prior experience mentoring or coaching students
- Experience with student engagement, recruitment, or leadership programs
- Workshop facilitation and public speaking
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Conflict resolution and peer mediation
- High emotional intelligence and active listening
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while remaining consistent and reliable
- Initiative and self-motivation
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- This position does have supervisory responsibility.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Travel for engagement activities and evening hours required to support for co-curricular program activities.
- Mentors are expected to be present for the full duration of the SOAR program, including participation in workshops, events, and group sessions
- Requires extended periods of standing, walking, or moving between locations during events and program activities.
- Work requires regular interaction with students, staff, and faculty, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills.
