About This Position

Primary Responsibilities
The Head of Product Management leads product strategy and execution of digital media products for Pew Research Center across multiple platforms. These include everything from reports to interactive features to videos, databases and large-scale applications. The ideal candidate is collaborative and detail-oriented with strong editorial judgment and time management skills.
The Head of Product Management will supervise a team of five digital producers and coordinate editorial calendars and audience plans in partnership with the communications team. The Head of Product Management will take a leading role in developing and maintaining content production processes and workflows, and in the ongoing development of the Center's WordPress-based content management and publishing system. The Head of Product Management reports to the Director of Digital Strategy.

FLSA Status: Exempt
Physical: Standard office environment which requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for most of the time, and to occasionally move around the office, as well as the ability to lift and carry light objects, such as paper, that generally weigh 20 lbs. or less.
Compensation: The typical starting salary for this position is $135,000 annually.
Hybrid Work Schedule: Pew Research Center staff are required to be present in the Center's Washington, D.C., office three core days weekly (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Staff may work virtually from remote locations on other days in a typical work week.

Key Duties
Team Management
- Supervise and provide guidance for a team of five digital producers, overseeing long-term product roadmaps as well as daily content production
- Serve as key liaison between editorial and engineering - ensuring CMS web apps are centered in overall product strategy
- Work with producers, designers and engineers to create content appropriate for audiences on digital, social and emerging platforms
- Help to streamline workflows between producers, researchers and other stakeholders
Product/Project Management
- Lead end-to-end product development: define requirements, set priorities and partner with engineering on sprint planning
- Design products with a systems mindset, building reusable tools and components within the CMS vs. one-off features
- Ensure the timely completion of digital products by overseeing schedules and milestones, helping to coordinate meetings and reviews with project stakeholders
- Coordinate internal and external resources for digital products and applications
- Help select and manage vendors, making recommendations on solutions, cost and contracts, overseeing projects, and ensuring adherence to statements of work and other contract requirements
Website Management and Content Strategy
- Lead content management system administration and publishing, working closely with the Head of Engineering and Associate Director of Design and UX on custom WordPress CMS
- Work with enterprise team to review digital and social traffic using Google Analytics, Parse.ly and Hootsuite among other tools, providing clear narrative analysis for internal and external stakeholders
- Work closely with the communications team, ensuring that projects align with brand identity and strategic objectives
- Manage technical aspects and implementation of digital campaigns and AI initiatives, in close coordination with the Associate Director of Digital Outreach
- Collaborate with audience team to measure product performance and identify user trends
- Keep up with developments in online publishing, search, AI and digital marketing
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Demonstrated skills in requirements-gathering, resource organization and schedule development
- Must be proactive, collaborative and able to work in a cross-functional team, bridging technical and editorial skill sets
- Ability to think through complex issues, leading to recommendations and action plans
- Interest in emerging digital technologies and best practices including content management, publication workflow, user experience, digital marketing, audio/video, etc.
- Strong interest in Pew Research Center's diverse body of work and in exploring innovative ways of promoting data and research via social and digital channels
- Strong written and oral communications skills
- Experience with project management tools (preferably Asana) and various analytics tools
Education/Training/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field
- Eight+ years digital media experience. Extensive experience in progressively responsible positions in product management and/or project management, including online strategy and operations, web development, and vendor management
- Experience implementing, maintaining and using a CMS, preferably WordPress
- Management experience preferred; project management certification a plus
