LIFEGUARD – JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all members and guests in and around the aquatic facilities. The Lifeguard will maintain constant surveillance of pool areas, enforce all safety rules and policies, and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations. This position plays a critical role in promoting water safety, preventing accidents, and creating a welcoming and safe environment for all YMCA members.

The Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring swimmers, recognizing potential hazards, preventing unsafe behavior, and responding appropriately to incidents. This includes performing water rescues, administering first aid, CPR, AED, and emergency oxygen as needed, and completing all required incident and accident reports accurately and in a timely manner. The Lifeguard will maintain a clean and organized pool deck, inspect equipment for safety, and report maintenance concerns immediately.

Lifeguards are expected to provide excellent customer service, positively engage with members and guests, support swim instructors and aquatic programs, and represent the YMCA in a professional and positive manner at all times. This position requires strong swimming skills, the ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Applicants must be at least 15 years of age or meet state requirements. Current lifeguard certification and CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required or must be obtained upon hire. This position requires the ability to work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to work in a warm, humid pool environment.
