Job Title: Industrial or Mechanical Engineering Summer Intern

Job Summary: As a Summer Intern at Rensa Filtration, you will have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that align with our company’s goals and provide hands-on learning experiences. Each intern will be assigned a manager at their specific place of work who will guide them, provide feedback, and ensure a valuable experience. You will connect with professionals across departments, attend team meetings, participate in cross-functional projects, and expand your network. At the end of the summer, you will have the chance to showcase what you’ve learned to the Rensa Senior Team through a brief presentation outlining your experiences and insights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Expanded Wire Backing Material – Coil Rewind & Process Stabilization
    1. The intern will complete and advance an in‑progress engineering project focused on improving the rewind process for expanded wire backing material.
    2. Key responsibilities:
      • Study the mechanical behavior of the expanded wire material throughout the expansion and winding process.
      • Identify the root causes of telescoping during rewind operations.
      • Develop concepts and engineering solutions (e.g., winding tension control, guides, mandrel adjustments, or material handling improvements).
      • Build prototypes or test setups as needed.
      • Conduct structured testing to validate concepts, analyze results, and document performance against required specifications.
      • Recommend a final design or process modification that ensures consistent and stable coiling.
  • FITS Material Manufacturing – Expander-Based Production Development
    1. The intern will lead engineering research and development activities to determine how the FITS material can be produced using expanders at the Smith Filter facility.
    2. Key responsibilities:
      • Review prior testing, current capability, and product dimensional/material requirements.
      • Conduct mechanical and process analysis to determine feasibility and production parameters.
      • Design and run targeted tests on expanders to evaluate material behavior, equipment capability, and potential tooling needs.
      • Analyze R&D test data and identify design or process adjustments required for reliable manufacturability.
      • Develop recommended production methods and provide supporting documentation (process flow, equipment setup, validation data).
      • Present findings and proposed path forward to engineering and operations leadership.
  • Collaborate with your assigned manager to receive guidance and feedback.
  • Connect with professionals across various departments to gain a broad understanding of the company.
  • Attend team meetings and participate in cross-functional projects.
  • Expand your professional network within the company.
  • Prepare and deliver a presentation to the Rensa Senior Team at the end of the summer, outlining your experiences and insights.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in a relevant field
  • Strong interest in the air filtration industry and a desire to learn.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
