About This Position

Job Purpose:

Responsible for directing all of the Environmental, Health & Safety functions in accordance with the policies and procedures of the corporation, the ethical and social conscience of business, and the laws and regulations of the government. The EHS Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and programs covering Environmental, Health & Safety issues to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Plan and carry out policies and programs relating to all phases of EHS activities by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned as needed):

  • Evaluate the organization’s Environmental, Health & Safety risks.
  • Provide direction to Senior Management concerning EHS compliance.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning of new programs/strategies and regulatory actions as those items impact the regulatory compliance of the corporation.
  • Develop progressive and proactive Safety programs to provide short and long-range health and welfare protection of the employees.
  • Develop a highly effective orientation program that emphasizes the critical importance and value of following all policies and working safely to protect one’s self and others.
  • Foster a workplace environment consistent with the values and mission outlined by the leadership of company.
  • Maintain current knowledge of state and federal and local laws and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain required OSHA, ISO, EPA and ADEM, records and training programs.
  • Monitor facilities management to ensure a safe and secure working environment and maintain compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Assist with worker's compensation administration and case management, which includes coordinating treatment and return to work for injured employees.
  • Give direction to physical plant matters, including directing and maintaining health and safety programs in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Provide technical advice and knowledge to management and others within the EHS discipline.
  • Continuous improvement of EHS programs, policies, practices, and processes associated with meeting the strategic and operational issues of the organization.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety or Environmental Management or related field from a four-year college or university.
  • Minimum of Five (5) years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret legal documents, contracts, technical journals, and federal / state regulations and standards.
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong counseling and consultation skills.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from employees, managers, customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Solid troubleshooting skills utilizing primary problem-solving techniques.
  • Thorough Health, Safety and Environmental knowledge.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written, listening, persuasive, influential)
  • Leadership skills (positive “can do” attitude, change management, decisiveness, ability to motivate, influence, and foster loyalty)
  • People/Team development skills (training, coaching)
  • Interpersonal skills (relationship building, teamwork, conflict resolution)
  • Results-oriented and takes ownership

Legal Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age due to federal labor law requirements.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequently within office, manufacturing floor, warehouse and occasional driving
  • Frequent exposure to noise and moving machinery, occasional exposure to dust, chemicals
  • Occasional walking on slippery or uneven surfaces or in areas of material handling
  • Frequent requirement of wearing PPE(safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection)
  • Constant use of computer and office equipment
  • Rare weekend work required, occasional travel

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional work required in spill response areas, hot work areas and other safety regulated areas
  • Frequent standing, walking and sitting, rare bending, kneeling or twisting
  • Rare requirement of lifting up to 20lbs
  • Frequent keyboarding, rare requirement of gripping or tool use
  • Constant use of vision, hearing and speech, rare use of smelling sensory
  • Frequent requirement of wearing PPE, rare working in hot/cold or dusty areas

Remote Work: Not Eligible.
