This position serves in the Emergency Department in capacities consistent with their level of training. When working in an emergency department-based role, administrative supervision will be provided by the emergency department nursing leadership team.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Works in a collaborative fashion as part of the ED care team, including ED physicians, PCAs, Unit Secretaries, and RN staff.
2. Monitors patients for any acute changes and communicates such changes to primary RN or physician.
3. Assists with procedures and patient care activities at the request of the ED physician/RN and in accordance with ED policy and procedure.
4. Establishes and maintains peripheral IV access.
5. Obtains medical history. Checks vital signs. Advises/informs physician/RN of observations to assist with diagnostic indication.
6. Maintains assignment as delegated by Flow/Resource/Charge nurse.
7. Provide support around Ambulance Triage including assisting with rapid clinical assessments to identify patients who appear acutely ill or at risk for rapid deterioration, assisting with the offload of ambulance patients as appropriate, and assisting with hourly documented monitoring and assessments/reassessments of patients in collaboration with care team unless conditions warrant more frequent monitoring.
8. Provide support around ED waiting room triage including rapid flow support of patients presenting with cardiac complaints or other high-risk symptoms; acting as the concierge for these patients through their initial assessment and care under the direction of the ED physicians and RNs.
9. Performs a variety of duties involving the transportation of patients throughout the hospital consistent with training. Assists nursing staff in the physical, lateral transfer of patients before and after patient transport.

II. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

III. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Certified in CPR-Basic Rescue by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
2. Certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association.
Preferred:
1. Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) training
2. PALS Certification
3. Phlebotomy Certification
4. EKG Certification
5. Paramedic/EMT License (current or expired)

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. At least one year of experience in the care of patients with critical illness within the last 5 years.
2. Demonstrated ability to work well under stressful situations.
3. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
4. Effective oral and written communication skills
Preferred:
1. Minimum one year of experience in EMS services, preferably integrated with a municipal first response system.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
IV. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered medium. Position requires work in a patient care/emergency room environment.

Frequently: Sitting, Standing, Walking, Pushing, Pulling, Twisting, Reaching, Performing Repetitive Movements, Precise Motor Skills required, Precise Hearing required, Precise Vision required; Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, and Pulling - Less than 10 pounds to 20 pounds.
Often: Balancing, Bending, Kneeling, Grasping, High Level of Stress; Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, and Pulling – 20 pounds to over 100 pounds.
Never: Climbing, Kneeling, Working Outdoors, Working in Temperature Extremes, Working at Heights.
