Sawyer County is currently accepting applications for a qualified and experienced Maintenance Director to lead the planning, management, and operational oversight of all County facilities, grounds, and fleet vehicles assigned to the Courthouse and Sheriff’s Department. This leadership position plays a key role in ensuring the County’s infrastructure is maintained to the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
Position Summary
The Maintenance Director is responsible for the comprehensive oversight and strategic direction of Sawyer County's buildings and grounds. This includes managing the County’s maintenance team, overseeing contracted services, maintaining HVAC systems, and ensuring effective fleet operations. The Director also manages custodial operations and is accountable for the planning and execution of capital improvement and preventative maintenance projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement maintenance and repair plans for all County-owned buildings, grounds, and fleet vehicles.
- Direct the activities of Maintenance Department staff and contractors to ensure timely, high-quality work that complies with applicable codes and County standards.
- Oversee custodial services to maintain clean, safe, and presentable County facilities.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and install HVAC systems and related mechanical equipment.
- Design and manage a preventative maintenance program to reduce downtime, extend equipment life, and control costs.
- Actively participate in hands-on maintenance and improvement projects as needed.
- Prepare specifications and evaluate proposals for capital and maintenance projects; recommend vendor selection per County procurement guidelines.
- Serve as a technical advisor to County departments for facility-related concerns and projects.
- Supervise and evaluate departmental personnel; address staffing issues and administer appropriate corrective actions.
- Develop and manage the department’s annual budget, including operational expenditures and capital improvement planning.
- Coordinate and provide training to ensure compliance with safety regulations and support staff development.
- Represent the County in renovation and construction projects, working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely and budget-conscious project completion.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support County operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in facility and grounds maintenance; at least three (3) years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Technical training in construction, HVAC, building systems, or mechanical trades may substitute for general experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Position Title: Maintenance Director
General Description:
The Maintenance Director is responsible for the comprehensive oversight,
strategic planning, and effective management of all Sawyer County buildings,
grounds, related infrastructure, and fleet vehicles assigned to the Courthouse
and Sheriff’s Department. This position ensures that all County facilities are
maintained at a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and operational
efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops, implements, and manages comprehensive maintenance and repair plans for all County-owned facilities, grounds and the County car fleet.
- Oversees and directs the work of Maintenance Department staff and contracted vendors on facility maintenance, repair, and improvement projects, ensuring quality workmanship, adherence to contract specifications, compliance with building codes, and alignment with County standards.
- Manages custodial services across most County buildings to ensure clean, safe, and well-maintained facilities.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and installs County HVAC equipment and systems.
- Establishes and maintains a preventive maintenance program to reduce equipment downtime, extend asset life, and minimize repair costs. Provides training to staff on maintenance best practices.
- Actively participates in maintenance and building projects as a hands-on team member.
- Prepares bid specifications for capital and maintenance projects, evaluates contractor proposals, and provides recommendations for vendor selection in alignment with County procurement policies.
- Serves as a technical resource for County departments regarding maintenance issues, remodeling initiatives, and facility operations.
- Supervises and evaluates Maintenance Department personnel, resolves staffing concerns, and administers disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Prepares and administers the department’s annual operating budget, including oversight of expenditures related to maintenance of all County facilities and CIP projects.
- Develops and coordinates training programs to ensure safety compliance and promote professional development within the Maintenance Department.
- Represents the County in facility renovation and capital improvement projects, coordinating closely with contractors and internal stakeholders to establish timelines, ensure project completion, and monitor budget adherence.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required in support of County operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building and grounds maintenance, three (3) years in a supervisory role involving oversight of maintenance and repair functions preferred.
- Relevant technical training in construction, building systems, or mechanical operations may be substituted for general experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and the Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook).
