About This Position
Wellness Instructor
Who We Are Looking For:
We are seeking part-time Wellness Instructor(s) who are motivated and enthusiastic about supporting community well-being through education, discussion, and practical skill-building. These instructors will serve as content facilitators in one or more priority wellness focus areas:
- Financial Wellness (e.g., basic budgeting, financial stress, financial planning)
- Social and Mental Wellness (e.g., stress management, emotional regulation, relationships, boundaries, cognitive health, workplace well-being)
- Digital Wellness (e.g., healthy technology use, media literacy, critical thinking, attention management, online well-being)
- Nutrition (e.g., balanced eating, meal planning, weight management, reducing inflammation, supplements)
- Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (Lifestyle education to reduce risk or manage conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension)
Part-Time Wellness Instructors typically teach 1–2 in-person classes per week, with most classes running 60 minutes in length. Classes may be offered as one-time workshops or as part of a 6 or 8-week series, depending on program goals and community interest. Most classes are scheduled during evening hours. Schedules are flexible and coordinated in collaboration with the Community Wellness Director.
What Winning as a Wellness Instructor Looks Like:
- Designs and delivers engaging, participant-centered wellness classes aligned with one or more priority focus areas.
- Creates a welcoming, inclusive learning environment that encourages participation, discussion, and practical application.
- Prepares thoroughly for each class, including materials, activities, and instructional flow.
- Collaborate with the Community Wellness Director to develop class formats and activities grounded in adult learning principles.
- Adjusts content and facilitation strategies in response to participant needs, feedback, and program goals.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with participants and staff regarding schedules, expectations, and program details.
- Maintains professionalism, appropriate boundaries, and inclusive practices in all instructional settings.
- Follows Derby Recreation Commission policies related to safety, supervision, and program delivery.
- Completes required documentation, including attendance tracking and participant feedback.
- Represents the Derby Recreation Commission positively in instructional and community-facing environments.

High School Diploma or GED required. College coursework or a degree in a related field (such as health, wellness, education, public health, social sciences, finance, or communications) preferred. College students are encouraged to apply.

EXPERIENCE:
Experience sufficient to demonstrate practical knowledge and comfort facilitating learning in at least one priority wellness area. Experience may include teaching, training, facilitation, coaching, certifications, or relevant professional roles.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Functions may be performed in indoor and outdoor environments and may include exposure to varying temperatures. Must have the ability to see and hear, sit, stand, stoop, bend, and move about. Must possess an audible speaking voice for instruction and group communication. Ability to lift and move class materials or light equipment as needed.

Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge, training, or experience in financial wellness, social/mental wellness, health/nutrition, and/or digital wellness.
- Experience facilitating learning, training, or group discussion with adults.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
- Reliable, organized, and able to manage preparation and follow-through for scheduled classes.
- Open to feedback and willing to collaborate to strengthen instructional quality.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
