This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: Moncayo Golf & Ocean Club, set outside of Fajardo, Puerto Rico.

Moncayo Golf & Ocean Club is seeking a Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join the Golf Course Maintenance Department.

Purpose of Position:

Under the superintendent’s supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, roughs, cart paths and the course proper in general.

Supervise the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his absence.

Skills & Knowledge Required:

Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, greens;

The maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.

Understanding of agronomy, turfgrass science and the rules of golf.

Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of

workers and equipment; The ability to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and public relations.

Work Experience & Education:

  • Formal Turfgrass Management/Agriculture training – a plus
  • 3 years minimum golf course experience
  • 1 year minimum golf course supervisor position


Key Result Area: Golf Course and Staff Supervision.

  • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
  • Schedules work, supervises employees in all course maintenance activities.
  • Ensures the safe use of course maintenance equipment by all employees.
  • Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
  • Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Keeps a daily work log containing all course maintenance activities.

Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and may also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.

Key Result Area: Other Duties

  • Other relevant duties as directed by the golf course superintendent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Required to work outside for long periods of time to perform his/her duties
  • Required to assist in manual labor activities when necessary
  • Reasonable physical strength, stamina and agility.
