This role sits at the center of healthcare coding quality and compliance, supporting accurate reimbursement and high standards of clinical documentation. You will review professional fee medical records and ensure coding integrity across ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers. Working in a fully remote and flexible PRN environment, you will play a key part in identifying documentation gaps, ensuring regulatory compliance, and improving coding accuracy. The position requires strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced workflow. You will also contribute directly to coder education by providing clear audit feedback and rationale. This is a highly impactful role that supports both revenue integrity and patient data accuracy across healthcare systems.
- Perform professional fee coding audits of medical records and abstracts using ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers, ensuring accurate code assignment and compliance with established guidelines
- Provide clear, detailed audit rationales, including documentation references and explanations for any coding adjustments or discrepancies
- Stay current with coding regulations, payer guidelines, and industry updates to ensure audit accuracy and relevance
- Manage and prioritize multiple audit cases simultaneously to support timely workflow completion and resolution
- Deliver coder education and feedback through the auditing process to improve overall coding quality and consistency
- Maintain professional standards aligned with AHIMA ethical guidelines while demonstrating strong communication, collaboration, and customer service skills
Requirements:
- Minimum 5+ years of professional fee coding and/or auditing experience in a healthcare setting
- Active CPC certification required; CPMA certification preferred
- Proven ability to maintain at least 95% coding accuracy rate
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS coding systems, modifiers, and medical record documentation standards
- Experience working with major EMR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or similar platforms
- Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills with the ability to handle high-complexity decision-making
- Excellent communication skills with a focus on education, collaboration, and professional integrity
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining consistency and quality
