Position Summary
The Physical Education Teacher will instruct maximum physical activity within allotted time to engage students and teach the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. This position will motivate students to cultivate physical fitness, discover and develop talents of students in physical achievement. They will also help students develop strength, skill, agility, poise and coordination individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Designs and delivers engaging and age-appropriate physical education lesson plans;
- Integrates a variety of physical activities, sports, and games into the curriculum;
- Teaches fundamental motor skills, coordination, and the rules of different sports and physical activities;
- Provides instruction in fitness concepts, including cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility;
- Establishes and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment;
- Manages classroom behavior and encourage respectful and cooperative participation;
- Manages and maintain sports equipment, ensuring a safe and organized learning environment;
- Coordinates the use of indoor and outdoor facilities for physical education activities;
- Assesses students' physical fitness levels and motor skills;
- Provides constructive feedback on individual and group performance;
- Modifies activities to accommodate students with diverse abilities and needs;
- Fosters an inclusive atmosphere that encourages all students to participate;
- Integrates health-related topics, such as nutrition and the importance of physical activity, into the curriculum;
- Promotes overall wellness and a lifelong commitment to fitness;
- Emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and cooperation in physical activities;
- Organizes and oversees intramural sports or school-wide events;
- Communicates effectively with students, parents, and colleagues regarding the physical education program and student progress;
- Collaborates with other teachers to integrate physical education into broader educational goals;
- Stays informed about current trends and developments in physical education;
- Participates in professional development opportunities and workshops.
- Analyzes data from assessments and benchmark testing to drive instruction;
- Meets those standards of performance for his/her individual teaching assignment developed by the Orleans Parish Public School System. Those standards include the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching;
- Serves on and participate in professional staff committees/meetings required;
- Performs other duties as required.
Supervision of Students
- Supervises students in various settings including on-campus and off-campus activities, before and after school during drop-off and pick-up, within the classroom, during class transitions, recess/intermission, lunch periods, assemblies, and any other assigned times or locations to ensure their safety and well-being.
Non-Instructional Components
- Attends non-instructional activities such as faculty and staff meetings, professional training sessions, IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, back-to-school and open house events, graduation ceremonies, PGP and PIP evaluations, observations, IAP and student discipline meetings/hearings, as well as school board and committee meetings and other meetings as needed/requested.
Extracurricular Activities
- Attends meetings and functions of employee sponsored activities, groups, or clubs.
- Attends work concessions/gates as requested by Principal or designee if applicable.
- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university, and meet the requirements and expectations set in Act 99;
- Concentration in Physical Education or Kinesiology strongly preferred;
- Valid Louisiana teaching certification strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of child development and age-appropriate physical activities;
- Passion for promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in elementary school students;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Strong classroom management skills;
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies.

- Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) part of the workday;
- Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than 30 pounds rarely;
- Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals) rarely;
- Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely;
- Normal setting for this job is an office/school setting.
Performance Evaluation
The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
