Job Description
The Higher Education Support Staff provides operational and administrative assistance to the Higher Education Department, focusing on the Summer Youth Worker Program (SYWP) and the Tribal Library. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe transportation of program participants using a 15-passenger van, assisting library patrons, and supporting educational events and outings. The Education Support Staff establishes a professional environment and promotes ethical standards to maintain a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the Tribe’s culture, vision, and values. Key responsibilities include coordinating logistics for "Education Fridays," supervising youth during off-site activities, and maintaining accurate program records.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate a 15-passenger van to provide safe and reliable transportation for participants in the Summer Youth Worker Program (SYWP) to assigned worksites and events.
- Assist library patrons with locating materials, processing check-outs, and utilizing computer resources.
- Coordinate logistics for "Education Fridays," including setting up venues, preparing materials, and facilitating youth participation.
- Supervise youth participants during field trips and community outings to ensure safety and professional conduct.
- Maintain accurate daily transportation logs, attendance records, and participant activity reports.
- Assist with the organization and shelving of library materials and the maintenance of the collection database.
- Facilitate clear communication between the Higher Education Department and youth workers regarding schedules and program expectations.
- Perform routine safety inspections and pre-trip checks of the 15-passenger van and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Support the delivery of educational workshops, presentations, and community outreach efforts.
- Assist with the planning and execution of community literacy events and SYWP recognition ceremonies.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records and participant information in accordance with tribal and federal privacy standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Confidence and proficiency in operating a 15-passenger van or similar large-capacity vehicle.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with youth, parents, and library patrons.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries while supervising and mentoring program participants.
- Basic knowledge of library operations, including filing systems and research assistance.
- Exceptional organizational skills for managing transportation schedules and event logistics.
- Competence in utilizing Microsoft Office applications and maintaining electronic records.
- Skill in de-escalating conflicts and managing youth behavior in a professional manner.
- High level of reliability and punctuality for scheduled transportation and events.
- Cultural competency and awareness regarding the community and tribal traditions.
- Ability to handle sensitive student information with a high degree of confidentiality.
- Commitment to a high standard of vehicle safety and passenger welfare.
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a professional and welcoming environment for the community.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum of one year of experience working with youth programs, education, or in a library setting preferred.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
- Proven experience or comfort level driving large multi-passenger vehicles.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods while operating a vehicle.
- Capacity to lift and move event supplies or library materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during outings and library shifts.
- Manual dexterity required for operating vehicle controls and computer equipment.
- Clear auditory and verbal skills necessary for safe driving and communication with participants.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Successful completion of applicable tribal drug test.
- Successful completion of applicable tribal background check.
- Must pass background investigation for suitability of character identified in accordance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no serious violations.
