The Studies Group:
The Studies Group is a specialized team within EPS that handles complex technical projects involving modeling, simulation, and transient stability analysis. Although we often conduct study work for clients that operate in the mainland grids, we specialize in the transmission systems and utility-scale generation of islanded power systems. We are experts in the technical challenges associated with these unique systems.
The Studies Group operates as a small but impactful team prioritizing individual caliber, collaboration, and agility over a large headcount. Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Power Systems Engineer to join our Studies Team in Bremerton, WA. This role offers a unique opportunity to perform and lead electrical system studies focusing on transmission reliability, interconnection, and integration studies for various generation types, and evaluate transmission system performance and compliance issues. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated professional capable of conducting technical studies with limited oversight while fostering our culture of continuous improvement and industry involvement in the face of a rapidly changing grid environment.
Core Responsibilities:
Modeling and Simulation:
● Lead technical studies including steady-state power flow, transient stability, short-circuit, and electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis.
● Develop and benchmark complex power system models using industry-standard tools such as Siemens PSS/e and PSCAD.
● Use, adapt, and develop Python scripts and third-party APIs to leverage automation, optimize data processing, enhance results visualization, and build/assess customized models.
Strategic Technical Analysis:
● Evaluate power system performance and compliance with various regional planning standards (e.g. NERC TPL, MOD, PRC, BAL, and FAC).
● Understand, evaluate, and provide recommendations related to other industry standards and requirements (e.g. IEEE 2800).
● Conduct interconnection studies for inverter-based resources (IBRs) including variable wind and solar resources and utility scale battery systems.
● Perform forensic analysis of power systems events, troubleshoot system performance issues and control interactions, and help model and provide recommendations to avoid future issues.
Project Technical Leadership:
● Ensure technical deliverables and project timelines are met and that the deliverables meet EPS’s high standards for quality and practicality.
● Identify technical risks in study results and propose mitigation strategies.
● Prepare technical reports and present project results/findings to varied engineering, management, and business stakeholders.
Requirements and Qualifications:
● Education: Receipt of a BSEE from an ABET-accredited college or university. A graduate degree with a focus on power and energy is highly valued.
● Professional Status: Professional Engineering (PE) licensure is preferred. Candidates who are Engineers-in-Training (EIT) at the tail-end of their experience requirement and actively pursuing licensure will also be considered.
● Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience in power system modeling, simulation, and analysis within a utility or consulting environment. Significant utility, consulting, vendor, or research lab experience is required.
● Location: This position is an important role in the growth of our new physical office in Bremerton, WA. Our office is located within walking distance of the Seattle-Bremerton ferry terminal, offering a straightforward commute for those living on the Seattle side. Bremerton offers a competitive cost of living while maintaining immediate access to the broader Puget Sound region. We may be willing to entertain hybrid configuration for the right candidate.
● Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States. EPS does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
